Project overview
Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive 200-amp meter/panel replacement with whole-home surge protection for homeowner Sherry Griffin in Clayton, NC on July 16, 2026. Led by technicians Gustavo Peralta and Gray Gorrell, this project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement services. The work is covered by our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty for lasting peace of mind.
Scope of work
- Permit and coordination: Pulled the required electrical permit and coordinated the scheduled power drop with the utility to perform a safe, code-compliant changeout.
- 200A meter/panel combo: Installed a new 200-amp, side-by-side meter/panel combo with feed-through lugs and a copper bus bar that carries a 50-year transferrable warranty.
- Whole-home surge protection: Added a $100K connected-equipment / 10-year warranty surge protection system to safeguard appliances and electronics from power spikes.
- Grounding upgrade: Drove and bonded new ground rods, installed and secured the grounding electrode conductor, and verified proper connections at the main service panel.
- Feeder conductors: Installed 2/0 THHN conductors for the 200-amp feeder as required for the new service equipment.
- Breaker updates and additions:
- 3× 30A double-pole (typical: dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, EV charger)
- 1× 60A standard (typical: range, furnace/air handler, small subpanel, EV charger)
- 1× 40A standard (typical: dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, EV charger)
- 1× 25A double-pole (typical: well pump, small condenser, mini-split)
- 4× 20A standard (typical: small appliances and general circuits)
- 5× 15A standard (typical: lighting and standard branch circuits)
- 4× 20A AFCI for living areas per current code as required
As part of our process, we also provided an electrical apprentice on-site to assist with efficiency and safety during the panel changeout.
Code compliance and important notes
Local inspectors are increasingly enforcing NEC 2020 provisions that may require AFCI protection on certain circuits. Adding AFCI breakers can immediately reveal preexisting issues—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping until resolved. In those cases, additional diagnostic time may be necessary to locate and correct legacy wiring conditions.
Project-specific exclusions can apply to items like riser/weatherhead components or service entrance cable routing above the meter, as well as feeders and conduit to remote main panels if needed. If a temporary power source is required during utility outages, our team can discuss generator options upon request.
