Reliable 200A Meter/Panel Combo Upgrade in Rock Hill, SC

On January 20, 2026, our Charlotte branch team (based out of Matthews) completed a full service upgrade for homeowner Jackie Rivera in Rock Hill. Led by technician Jose Rodriguez, we replaced an obsolete interior panel and outdated meter with a modern 200A over/under meter-panel combo, added new grounding, and coordinated all permitting and utility scheduling to ensure a smooth, code-compliant installation.

This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement services, designed to improve safety, reliability, and capacity for today’s electrical needs.

What We Upgraded

  • 200A Meter/Panel Combo (over/under, with feed-through lugs) – Consolidated metering and main distribution in a modern assembly, replacing obsolete equipment and simplifying service.
  • Grounding System – Installed new ground rods and grounding electrode conductors to enhance fault protection and meet current standards.
  • Riser and Weatherhead – Added a new riser with IMC conduit, straps, roof boot, and service entrance cable from the new meter to the weatherhead, correcting the prior weatherhead location that was tucked under the soffit and protecting previously exposed riser wiring.
  • Breaker Replacements – Updated multiple branch circuits with new breakers:
    • 3 × 30A Double-Pole (typical for dryer, water heater, or A/C)
    • 6 × 20A Standard (small appliance and general-use circuits)
    • 4 × 15A Standard (lighting and standard branch circuits)

By modernizing the service equipment and distribution, the home is better protected against faults, enjoys improved capacity, and is ready for future electrical additions.

Why This Upgrade Was Needed

During our evaluation, we noted several issues: an obsolete interior panel located in the laundry area, an outdated meter, exposed riser wiring, a weatherhead beneath the soffit, and only a single aging ground rod. Moving to a meter/panel combo and installing a proper riser and weatherhead provided the safest and most efficient path to bring the home up to current standards while eliminating points of water and weather intrusion.

Code, Safety, and Inspection Readiness

As inspectors in our area continue implementing NEC 2020 requirements, some existing circuits may need AFCI upgrades. In certain homes, adding AFCI protection can reveal preexisting issues—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping and require additional diagnostic time. We prepare homeowners for these possibilities and address them methodically to meet code and ensure long-term reliability.

Permits, Utility Coordination, and Downtime Planning

Touchstone Electric handled all permits and utility coordination, including scheduling the temporary power drop, to streamline the process from start to finish. For customers concerned about outage time, we can make a temporary generator available for limited power use upon request during the switchover. When minor interior access is necessary for safe junctioning (for example, in a laundry room), our team communicates clearly and works neatly to minimize disruption.
