200A Meter/Panel Combo Upgrade and Partial Rewire in Greenville, SC
Touchstone Electric’s Greenville team completed a comprehensive service upgrade for Bobby and Rhona Sims in Greenville, SC. From our Taylors branch, technicians Tyler Harris and Christian Cedillos installed a new 200A meter/panel combo, added a new service riser with weatherhead, upgraded grounding with new ground rods, and performed a targeted 550 sq ft rewire to replace aging knob-and-tube and unsafe extension-cord circuits. The project was permitted, inspected, and completed on August 1, 2025.
Scope of Work Completed
- Meter Base and Riser with Weatherhead: Installed IMC conduit from the meter base to the weatherhead with proper strapping, roof boot, and service-entrance cable up to the weatherhead.
- Meter/Panel Combo – 200A (over/under with feed-through lugs): Coordinated utility disconnect/reconnect, pulled permits, installed the new combo unit, and established grounding with new ground rods and grounding electrode conductors.
- Grounding System Upgrade: Drove new ground rods and bonded the system to the main service per code, ensuring secure and lasting connections.
- Partial Rewire – 550 sq ft: Disconnected power, removed aging knob-and-tube wiring, fished in new code-compliant wiring, reconnected devices, restored power, then tested and inspected.
- Redevice – 550 sq ft: Replaced standard and GFCI 120V outlets, switches, and wall plates; upgraded receptacles to tamper-resistant for added safety.
- Breaker Updates: Installed new breakers to support modern loads: 5× 15A standard (lighting/standard branch), 6× 20A standard (small appliances), 2× 30A double-pole (dryer/water heater/AC, etc.), and 2× 50A standard (range/subpanel/EV-ready, etc.).
The combined upgrades enhanced service capacity, safety, and reliability while preparing the home for present and future electrical needs.
Safety, Code, and Inspection Readiness
As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 requirements in the Greenville, SC area, some existing circuits may need upgrades to AFCI protection. In certain homes, preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) can cause immediate AFCI tripping and may require additional diagnostic time to resolve. Our team communicated these possibilities up front and completed all permit and inspection steps for a smooth approval process.
The new grounding system and tamper-resistant receptacles strengthen shock protection, while the 200A service and properly sized breakers provide balanced, dependable power distribution throughout the upgraded areas.
Why This Upgrade Was Needed
Older knob-and-tube wiring and makeshift extension-cord circuits are often undersized and lack modern safety features. By replacing these sections with new wiring and devices, the home now benefits from safer conductors, better overcurrent protection, and outlets and switches that meet today’s standards. The meter/panel combo and riser improvements also deliver a cleaner service entrance and improved reliability.
