Electrical Panel & Meter Upgrade in Matthews, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch completed a permitted service upgrade for homeowner Alex Quimby in Matthews, NC on 2025-04-28. Lead technician Danny Bishop installed a new 200A meter panel combo on the exterior of the home and added a dedicated 100A outdoor subpanel to support current and future pool equipment.
- Primary category: Panels & Service Upgrades
- Secondary category: Meter Base & Service Replacement
- Service area: Matthews, NC and surrounding South Charlotte communities
Project scope and components
We replaced the existing meter base with a modern 200-amp meter panel combo designed for reliable, code-compliant service. The upgrade improves capacity for household loads and adds crucial safety features.
- New 200A meter panel combo: Removal of the old meter and exterior raceway, new service conduit and riser, properly sized service entrance cable to the utility drip loop, and a main breaker disconnect.
- Grounding and bonding: Installation of ground rods and connections to bring the service up to current NEC requirements.
- Integrated surge protection: Whole-home surge protection at the service to help safeguard sensitive electronics and appliances.
- New service entrance cabling: Professionally routed and secured conductors between service equipment for durability and compliance.
To support the homeowner’s pool plans, we also furnished and installed a weather-rated 100A exterior subpanel dedicated to pool-related loads.
- 100A outdoor subpanel: Mid-sized enclosure with capacity for up to 10 breakers and a 100A 2-pole breaker for the feeder.
- Future-ready for pool equipment: Dedicated space for pumps, heaters, lighting, and controls as needed by the pool contractor.
- Scope clarity: This project did not include pool equipment wiring, trenching, or detached-structure grounding systems.
Permits, inspections, and power coordination
All work was performed under an electrical permit and coordinated with the local inspection authority and utility provider. A temporary power disconnect was required to complete the meter base replacement and service reconnections. Depending on inspection and utility scheduling, homeowners may experience a 1–2 day outage. For comfort and safety, temporary power options can be made available upon request during the outage window.
Our team handled scheduling, safety lockout procedures, and final testing to ensure the upgraded service equipment operates safely and meets local code requirements.
