Code-Compliant 200A Meter/Main Panel Upgrade in Goldsboro, NC

Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive Panels & Service Upgrades project in Goldsboro, NC for homeowner Billy Clark on December 11, 2025. Led by technician Francisco Martinez, the job focused on replacing an aging meter/main panel with a modern 200-amp meter/panel combo, adding whole-home surge protection, updating key breakers, and securing permits for a smooth, code-compliant installation.

This project falls under our Meter Base & Service Replacement services and included our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty for added peace of mind.

What We Upgraded for This Home

  • Permit handling: We pulled the required electrical permit to ensure the work met local and state code.
  • 200A meter/main panel replacement: Installed a meter/panel combo with over/under feed-through lugs and an aluminum bus bar that includes a 20-year transferable warranty.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Added a system with a $10K/3-year warranty to protect sensitive electronics and appliances from utility and weather-related surges.
  • Utility coordination: Scheduled the temporary power drop with the power provider to perform the service safely and efficiently.
  • Grounding upgrades: Installed ground rods and grounding electrode conductors for a robust, code-compliant grounding path.

By upgrading the service equipment and grounding, this Goldsboro home gained improved safety, better capacity for modern loads, and long-term reliability.

Breaker Updates Included

As part of the meter/main replacement, we installed and updated several standard breakers sized for common residential loads:

  • 50A standard breaker: Often used for ranges, furnaces/heaters, small subpanels, or EV chargers.
  • 60A standard breaker: Suitable for larger appliances, heaters, small subpanels, or EV charging equipment.
  • 40A standard breaker: Common for dryers, water heaters, A/C condensers, spas, or EV charging.
  • 30A double-pole breaker: Typical for dryers, water heaters, A/C condensers, or spas.
  • 20A double-pole breaker: Used for dedicated small appliance circuits.
  • 100A two-pole breaker: Serves a subpanel where additional circuits are distributed.

These updates help distribute power safely and accommodate present and future electrical needs within the home.

Surge Protection for the Entire Home

Today’s homes have more sensitive electronics than ever. The installed whole-home surge protector adds an extra layer of defense against voltage spikes from storms and utility events. The system carries a $10K/3-year warranty, offering added assurance for the homeowner’s equipment and devices.

Permitting, Inspections, and AFCI Considerations

We handled all permitting and coordinated inspection to maintain compliance with current standards. As inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 code, upgrading certain circuits to AFCI breakers may be required. In some homes, preexisting conditions—such as shared neutrals—can cause immediate tripping when AFCI is introduced. When this occurs, additional diagnostic work may be necessary to locate and correct the issue, which can involve tracing circuits and inspecting fixtures to isolate shared neutrals.

Scope Notes and Exclusions

For clarity, this meter/main upgrade did not include the cost of the riser/weatherhead, service entrance cable from the new meter to the weatherhead, or feeder and conduit runs to downstream main panels if needed. At the customer’s request, Touchstone can make a generator available for limited power usage during the outage window.
