200A Meter/Main Panel Replacement and Surge Protection in Cary, NC
Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive service upgrade for homeowner Andrew Graves in Cary. On August 27, 2026, our team replaced the 200A meter/main combination panel, updated the grounding system, and installed a whole-home surge protective device to safeguard appliances and sensitive electronics. We handled all permits and coordinated the utility power disconnect/reconnect to keep the project efficient and code-compliant.

What We Installed
- 200A meter/main combo with feed-through lugs: We installed a new meter/panel combination and completed the grounding system upgrade with ground rods and grounding electrode conductors. The panel features an aluminum bus bar with a 20-year transferable warranty from the manufacturer.
- Whole-home surge protection ($50k/10-year coverage): A service-entrance surge protective device was mounted at the main electrical panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground. This helps shield wiring, breakers, outlets/switches, and hardwired equipment from damaging surges due to lightning events nearby, utility grid fluctuations, or large appliances cycling on and off—helping extend the life of home electronics and appliances.
- Permits and utility coordination: We pulled the required permits, scheduled the power drop with the utility, and managed inspections. Touchstone can also provide a generator for limited power use during planned outages upon request.
Scope notes: The meter/panel combo scope does not include the riser/weatherhead, breakers, service-entrance cable from the new meter to the weatherhead, or feeder/conduit to downstream main panels unless otherwise specified.
Surge Protector Warranty Details
The installed surge protector includes a manufacturer’s $50,000 equipment coverage for 10 years. Claims are secondary to your homeowner’s insurance and do not cover direct lightning strikes. “Covered equipment” generally includes major appliances such as washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, disposal, stove, interior HVAC equipment, wiring, outlets/switches, breakers, and hardwired devices (e.g., built-in microwaves, furnace, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape lighting, and home lighting) when protected by a properly connected BoltShield SPD. Security systems and medical equipment are excluded.
Code Compliance and AFCI Considerations
As inspectors in our area continue implementing NEC 2020, some projects may require AFCI upgrades on certain circuits. In older homes, AFCIs can reveal preexisting wiring issues—like shared neutrals—that may cause immediate tripping. If that occurs, additional diagnostic and corrective work could be needed to isolate and resolve the condition.
