Project overview
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a 200A meter/main electrical panel and service upgrade for homeowner Diane Kalendra in Raleigh, NC. Led by technician Matthew Castello, this project modernized the home’s service capacity, improved grounding, and prepared the system for current code requirements. Work included permitting and coordination with the local utility to ensure a smooth, safe cutover.

What we upgraded
- 200A meter/main panel combo: We replaced the existing equipment with a new 200-amp meter/main combo to provide reliable capacity for present and future electrical needs.
- Copper bus bar: The new panel features a copper bus bar for superior conductivity and durability. The bus bar carries a 50-year transferrable warranty from the manufacturer.
- Permitting and inspections: Our team pulled the required permit and handled scheduling with the inspector and the power provider for a temporary service drop and safe re-energization.
- Grounding system upgrade: We installed new ground rods and connected grounding electrode conductors to the main electrical service, securing all terminations to enhance system safety and fault protection.
- Service/feeder conductors: We installed THHN 2/0 conductors as part of the 200-amp service to ensure the new equipment is supplied by properly sized wiring.
To minimize disruption, Touchstone Electric can make a generator available for limited power usage during the outage period upon request.
Code readiness and inspection notes
Raleigh inspectors are actively implementing NEC 2020 requirements. During service and panel upgrades, they may call for AFCI breaker installation on certain circuits. In some homes, existing conditions such as shared neutrals can cause immediate tripping when AFCI protection is added. If present, tracing and correcting shared neutrals may require additional diagnostic time, including opening fixtures to isolate the affected runs.
