Panels & Service Upgrades in Union, SC

On February 26, 2025, Touchstone Electric’s Greenville branch, based in Taylors, completed a comprehensive service upgrade for a home in Union, SC. Our technician, Tyler Harris, led the project for Servpro - Spartanburg County (MP Restoration LLC), delivering a clean, code-compliant installation that improves safety, reliability, and future capacity. The customer praised our team in their review of the project.

Project Overview

This job centered on a 200A meter base replacement with a new riser and weatherhead, paired with a midsize indoor subpanel to expand circuit capacity. We also installed GFCI protection where required, enhanced the grounding system with driven ground rods, added crawlspace lighting, and addressed safety details such as firestopping and nail plating at penetrations. The existing exterior main disconnect was retained.

What We Completed

  • 200A Meter Base Replacement & Riser: Installed a new 200-amp meter base, IMC conduit to the weatherhead, and service entrance conductors. We coordinated permitting and the utility power drop, then re-sealed exterior openings to keep out moisture and critters.
  • Grounding System Upgrades: Drove new ground rods and bonded the grounding electrode conductor to the service equipment for a robust, code-compliant grounding path.
  • Midsize Indoor Subpanel (12/24 up to 125A): Added a dedicated subpanel to increase circuit space. Neutrals and grounds were isolated as required, and labeling was updated for clarity.
  • GFCI & Standard Breakers: Installed a mix of 15A and 20A GFCI breakers to protect areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, exterior, crawlspace, and garage, plus three 30A double‑pole breakers for heavier loads (e.g., dryer, water heater, or HVAC equipment).
  • Panel Rejuvenation: Vacuumed and cleaned the panel, re-tensioned lugs and bus connections, verified correct utility voltage, applied antioxidant where appropriate, and tested protective devices with customer consent. We also checked for water intrusion and sealed any unused openings.
  • Crawlspace Lighting & Controls: Installed a new switch and two crawlspace lights for improved safety and maintenance visibility.
  • Weatherproof Power & Receptacles: Added a two‑gang weatherproof outlet box at the exterior panel for temporary power needs, a GFCI outlet with cover, a standard receptacle, and a bubble cover for in‑use weather protection.
  • Firestopping & Penetration Protection: Applied fire-rated caulking and installed nail plates where required to maintain fire barriers and protect cabling from fasteners. We also relocated and replaced an outdated fuse box to modernize the distribution setup.

Throughout the process, we maintained the existing exterior main disconnect and minimized downtime by planning work steps and coordinating with the utility.

Code Compliance and Home Safety

As local inspectors continue adopting NEC 2020, some circuits may require AFCI protection. Adding AFCI devices can reveal preexisting issues (such as shared neutrals) that need diagnosis and correction. Our team explains findings clearly and provides options to keep your home both compliant and dependable.
