About this 200A service upgrade in Charlotte, NC
Our Matthews-based Charlotte branch at Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive 200-amp meter base combo and service upgrade for homeowner William Piner in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Chris Rogers, this outdoor service upgrade delivers reliable capacity for present needs and future-ready projects like EV charging, HVAC improvements, and additional subpanels.
What we installed
This project focused on replacing aging service equipment with a modern, code-compliant outdoor solution and updating protection to match the home’s electrical demand. Key elements included:
- New 200A meter/panel combo (over/under, feed-through lugs): Consolidates the meter and main panel outdoors, opens options for future feeders via feed-through lugs, and simplifies service access for utility and inspections.
- Permit and utility coordination: We handled permitting and scheduled the temporary power drop with the utility to complete the work efficiently and safely.
- Grounding system upgrade: Installed new ground rods and ran continuous grounding electrode conductors to the main service equipment for a durable, low-impedance path to ground.
- Breakers installed:
- 100A two-pole breaker for a subpanel
- 50A two-pole breaker suitable for a range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, or EV charger
- 30A two-pole breaker suitable for a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger
- 20A single-pole breaker for small appliance circuits
Upon request, Touchstone Electric can make a generator available for limited power usage during the planned outage window.
Grounding and code compliance
Reliable grounding is essential for occupant safety and equipment protection. As part of this upgrade, our team improved the home’s grounding electrode system and ensured a continuous, properly sized grounding electrode conductor back to the main service. We follow current code requirements and work closely with local inspectors throughout every service upgrade.
As Charlotte-area inspectors continue adopting NEC 2020, some existing circuits may require AFCI protection. When AFCI breakers are added, they can reveal preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may trip the breaker and require diagnostic work to correct. Our team explains these findings clearly and provides options to bring affected circuits into compliance.
