200A Meter Base and Main Panel Upgrade in Charlotte, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch completed a full 200A service upgrade for homeowner Robin Haddock in Charlotte, NC on May 3, 2024. Led by technician Brian Cain, this project modernized the home’s electrical service from the meter base to the indoor main panel, brought grounding and bonding to current code, and included permitting and inspection for a smooth, compliant finish.

This job is part of our Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement offerings, performed by our local team serving the greater Charlotte area.

Scope of Work Completed

  • New 200A meter base: Coordinated the utility power drop, pulled permits, installed the new meter base, and ran conduit from the meter to the weatherhead.
  • Service entrance cable: Installed approximately 60 ft of SER 4/0 (4‑wire) service entrance cable to the end of the drip loop for a robust 200A connection.
  • Grounding and bonding to code: Installed ground rods with grounding electrode conductors and ensured all connections were properly bonded for safety and code compliance.
  • 200A indoor main panel (aluminum bus): Replaced the panel and main lugs, reconnected existing circuits, and labeled the new panel for clarity and maintenance.
  • Surge protection: Included a panel-mounted surge protector with a $25k warranty as part of the panel package.
  • Permitting and inspection: Managed permitting and arranged final inspection for a compliant, documented upgrade.

Breaker and Safety Updates

To align with current electrical standards and provide balanced, reliable power distribution, we updated branch circuit protection and added targeted safety upgrades:

  • Standard breakers: Nine 20A, three 15A, one 30A (double‑pole), one 40A, and one 50A breaker for major appliances and general circuits as applicable.
  • GFCI protection: Installed a 15A GFCI breaker for required locations and added a GFCI receptacle for enhanced shock protection.
  • Weatherproof coverage: Fitted a bubble cover on an exterior receptacle to maintain weatherproofing whether in use or not.
  • Circuit wiring improvements: Added approximately 50 ft of NM‑B 14/2 cable to support 15A lighting and general‑purpose outlet circuits where needed.

During temporary power interruptions, Touchstone Electric can provide a generator for limited usage upon request to help keep essentials running.

Code Compliance and Long‑Term Reliability

Upgrading to a 200A meter base and main panel ensures the home’s electrical system is properly sized for today’s loads and future additions like EV charging, HVAC upgrades, and kitchen remodels. Grounding and bonding improvements reduce the risk of shock and equipment damage, while surge protection adds a vital layer of defense for sensitive electronics.

Our Charlotte team handled all permitting and inspection steps, so the homeowner benefits from documented compliance and peace of mind that the installation meets current local and national electrical codes.

Robin also enrolled in our Annual Home Safety Membership – Gold, which supports year‑round protection through:
