200A Main Panel Upgrade and Surge Protection in Hope Mills, NC
Our Raleigh branch completed a permitted, code-compliant main service upgrade for homeowner Beth Gregory in Hope Mills, NC on April 8, 2026. Lead technician Brad Williams replaced the aging panel with a modern 200-amp indoor main panel and added whole-home surge protection to safeguard appliances and electronics.

What We Upgraded
- Permitting & Inspection: Pulled the required electrical permit and coordinated inspection for full compliance.
- 200A Main Electrical Panel (Aluminum bus): Brought the service to current electrical code, replaced the panel and main lugs, labeled all circuits, grounded and bonded the panel, and reconnected the service-entrance conductors and existing branch circuits.
- Temporary Power: During the planned outage, we made a generator available for limited power needs to minimize disruption.
Scope note: This project did not include a separate service disconnect, feeder, or meter upgrade.
Whole-Home Surge Protection Installed
We installed a panel-mounted surge protective device to divert damaging voltage spikes safely to ground. This helps protect sensitive electronics and extend the life of appliances affected by lightning-related surges, utility fluctuations, and large loads cycling on and off.
- Warranty coverage: $50,000 for 10 years on covered equipment when protected by the properly connected device.
- Covered equipment includes: washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, indoor HVAC unit, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, wiring, outlets/switches, electrical components (like breakers), and hardwired devices such as built-in microwaves, furnace/air handler, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape lighting, and home lighting.
- Important notes: Claims are secondary to the homeowner’s insurance policy; direct lightning strikes are excluded; security systems and medical equipment are excluded.
Breaker Updates for Safety and Reliability
To match the new panel and current loads, we updated key breakers:
- 1 × 70A standard breaker
- 1 × 30A double-pole standard breaker
- 1 × 20A double-pole standard breaker
- 15 × 20A standard breakers
As inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020, certain circuits may require AFCI protection. In some homes, preexisting conditions such as shared neutrals can cause immediate tripping and may require additional diagnosis to resolve. Our team explains these requirements up front and provides options based on inspection feedback.
Warranties and Craftsmanship
- Panel warranty: 20-year transferable warranty on the aluminum-bus main panel.
- Surge protection warranty: $50,000 of coverage for 10 years on covered equipment, as noted above.
