200A Main Panel Upgrade & Whole‑Home Surge Protection in Garner, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a comprehensive main electrical panel upgrade for Dennis Baker in Garner, NC. This project brought the home’s service equipment up to current code, improved safety and reliability, and added robust surge protection for sensitive electronics and appliances. What We Upgraded
- Permit & Inspection: We pulled the required permit and coordinated inspection for full compliance.
- 200A Main Electrical Panel (Aluminum Bus): Replaced the indoor main panel, grounded and bonded the enclosure, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and neatly relabeled all circuits. The aluminum bus panel includes a 20‑year transferable manufacturer warranty.
- Whole‑Home Surge Protection: Installed a $50,000, 10‑year rated surge protective device at the main panel to help shield covered equipment from damaging voltage spikes resulting from storms, utility fluctuations, or equipment cycling.
- Breaker Updates: We installed new code‑compliant breakers, including:
- 1 × 50A standard (range, furnace/heat, small subpanel, EV charger, etc.)
- 4 × 30A double‑pole (dryer, water heater, condenser, spa, EV charger, etc.)
- 8 × 20A standard (small appliance/general use)
- 9 × 15A standard (lighting and standard branch circuits)
- 1 × 15A GFCI (kitchen small appliance outlets, exterior, crawl/basement, garage lighting)
- 2 × 20A GFCI (bath, dining, laundry, garage receptacles, exterior/crawl/basement, etc.)
- 2 × 15A double‑pole (as required by existing circuits)
- Grounding System Upgrade: Drove new ground rods and connected the grounding electrode conductor to the main service equipment for a low‑impedance, code‑compliant grounding path.
- Temporary Power Support: During the scheduled outage, we made a generator available for limited power usage to minimize disruption.
Why This Upgrade Matters
Modern panels and protective devices improve safety, reduce nuisance tripping, and provide capacity for today’s appliances, HVAC, and EV charging. Whole‑home surge protection diverts excess voltage to ground before it can damage covered equipment, helping extend the lifespan of electronics and appliances.
Surge Protector Coverage: Manufacturer coverage is up to $50,000 for 10 years (per terms and conditions), is secondary to your insurance policy, and excludes direct lightning strikes. Certain items such as security systems and medical equipment are not covered.
Code & Safety Notes (NEC 2020)
As local inspectors implement NEC 2020, some homes may require AFCI or combination AFCI/GFCI protection on additional circuits. In older wiring systems, shared neutrals or preexisting conditions can cause immediate tripping when AFCI protection is added, and diagnostics may be needed to locate and correct those issues. Our team evaluates these requirements on site and discusses the best path to compliance.
