Project overview: 200A electrical service upgrade in Easley, SC
Our Greenville branch completed a comprehensive 200 amp service and panel upgrade for homeowner Mathew Perry in Easley, SC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, this Panels & Service Upgrades project modernized the home’s electrical infrastructure, improved safety, and prepared the property for present and future power needs. Completion date: December 1, 2023.
Scope of work completed
- Installed new 200A feed-through meter panel to serve as the updated service equipment and distribution point.
- Installed a new 200A interior main lug panel in the basement laundry area to provide ample breaker space and capacity for the home.
- Added a dedicated 30A circuit for the water heater in the crawl space and installed a proper disconnect; the previous setup used 12/2 cable and lacked a required disconnect.
- Ran a new 50A range circuit to replace an outdated two-wire feed with an open splice found in the crawl space, restoring safety and code compliance.
- Installed whole-house surge protection to guard sensitive electronics and appliances against voltage spikes.
- Upgraded grounding as part of the 200A service upgrade package, including ground electrodes as required.
This Electrical Panel Upgrade brings the home up to modern standards, resolving long-standing wiring deficiencies and increasing overall reliability.
Why this upgrade was needed
During our assessment, we found several issues that made an upgrade the safest and most practical path forward:
- The water heater’s circuit lacked a local disconnect and was wired with cable not appropriate for the load and application.
- The kitchen range was served by an outdated two-wire circuit with an open splice in the crawl space—both unsafe and non-compliant.
- The existing service capacity and equipment did not provide the headroom or protection needed for today’s household demands.
By installing a new 200A service with proper distribution equipment, dedicated high-amperage circuits, and surge protection, the home now meets current code requirements and supports modern appliances with confidence.
Safety, code compliance, and surge protection
Every component was installed and tested to align with current electrical codes. Correctly sized conductors, dedicated overcurrent protection, properly terminated splices, and a code-compliant disconnect for the water heater were all part of this upgrade. The whole-home surge protector adds an extra layer of defense for electronics, HVAC systems, and smart devices, helping reduce the risk of damage from power disturbances.
Timeline and homeowner expectations
We coordinated the utility and panel changeover to minimize inconvenience. As communicated in advance, power was expected to be off for approximately 1 to 1.5 days during the service replacement. To fit the new interior panel, limited drywall removal in the laundry area was required; any drywall repair and painting were to be handled by others after our work was completed. A booking deposit was collected in advance, with the remaining balance due at completion.
