Completed Project Overview — Charlotte, NC

Our Charlotte branch, operating from our Matthews location, completed a comprehensive 200A electrical panel upgrade and breaker replacement for homeowner Mike Mulligan in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Mark Viktorovich, this service brought the home’s power distribution up to current code, improved safety, and added capacity for a new major appliance.

Completion date: August 2025

Scope of Work

  • Two 200A indoor main panel upgrades (aluminum): Panels were replaced, main lugs updated, and all circuits reconnected. Both panels were properly grounded and bonded, and the directories were labeled for future clarity.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Installed a surge protector with a $10k warranty to help safeguard the home’s sensitive electronics and appliances from voltage spikes.
  • Breaker replacements and additions: Replaced a mix of standard breakers, including 22x 15A and 10x 20A single-pole, plus 2x 20A double-pole, 1x 30A double-pole, and 1x 40A. Installed a new 60A breaker to support the customer’s dedicated high-demand appliance circuit.
  • New feeder run: Pulled 38 feet of 6/3 NM-B Romex to deliver a robust 240V supply suitable for larger equipment and appliances.
  • Major appliance installation (customer-supplied): Provided the receptacle or hard-wired connection as needed and finalized the circuit during the same visit.
  • Permitting and inspection: Filed the electrical permit with the county and coordinated the final inspection. A service-call discount was applied since the estimate was approved on site.
  • Power continuity during work: While power was temporarily disconnected for safety, a generator was made available for limited usage during the outage.

Code Compliance and Safety Notes

As inspectors in our area continue to implement the 2020 NEC, some homes may be required to upgrade certain circuits to AFCI breakers. In older wiring systems, preexisting conditions (such as shared neutrals) can cause nuisance tripping when AFCIs are added. If discovered, these conditions may require additional diagnostic time to resolve. Our team explains these scenarios up front so homeowners know what to expect during inspection and any follow-up.

For this Charlotte project, we ensured correct grounding, bonding, and labeling practices throughout, and verified proper terminations and torque. The result is a safer, cleaner, and more maintainable electrical system designed for today’s household loads and electronics.

Why This Upgrade Was the Right Fit

  • Safety-first modernization: New main panels, corrected bonding/grounding, and updated breakers reduce risk and improve reliability.
  • Protection against surges: Whole-home surge protection adds an essential layer of defense for modern electronics and HVAC equipment.
  • Capacity for larger appliances: The dedicated 60A circuit and 6/3 NM-B run support high-demand equipment with the correct conductor sizing.
  • Smoother inspections: Permit handling and panel labeling help streamline final inspection and future service needs.
