200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Spartanburg, SC
Touchstone Electric recently completed a comprehensive main panel replacement for homeowner Jeff Kuntz in Spartanburg. This Panels & Service Upgrades project expanded the home’s capacity to a 200-amp indoor main panel and set the property up for safe, reliable power today and in the future. The work was performed by our Greenville branch team out of our Taylors location and wrapped up on May 29, 2026.
What We Upgraded
We replaced the existing main garage panel with a new 200A panel to support current needs and planned additions, including multiple dedicated circuits for the crawlspace and other areas. Our scope included grounding and bonding updates, clean labeling, and reconnecting the service entrance and existing circuits to meet current code.
- New 200A main panel (indoor): Brought up to current electrical code, properly grounded and bonded, with clear circuit labeling.
- Expanded circuit capacity: Added 26 standard 20A circuits and multiple double-pole breakers for higher-demand equipment.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed to help protect sensitive electronics and appliances from voltage spikes.
- Permitting and inspection: All work completed with permitting and scheduled inspections.
Generator Interlock and Inlet for Reliable Backup Power
To give this Spartanburg home dependable backup capability, we integrated a generator interlock and inlet with a dedicated 50A breaker. The panel was reconfigured so the generator breaker and priority loads are positioned together at the top-left of the panel for quick access.
- Interlock on panel face: Prevents dangerous backfeed and ensures safe operation during an outage.
- Clear outage labeling: We sticker-coded the panel to make it easy to know which breakers to operate when switching to generator power.
- Generator inlet and feeder: Installed an inlet with up to 15 ft of feeder from the panel, plus a 15 ft whip for easy connection to a portable unit.
- Inclusions: 50A breaker, interlock kit, mounted inlet, and any required splicing inside the panel.
- Note: Conduit (if required) and a portable generator are not included.
Code and Safety Considerations
As local inspectors adopt NEC 2020, some homes may require AFCI protection on certain circuits. While AFCI breakers improve safety, they can expose preexisting wiring issues—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping. If discovered, those conditions sometimes require additional diagnostic and correction to bring the affected circuits into compliance. Our team advises homeowners on options and next steps if any such issues arise during inspection.

- 1 × Generator interlock and inlet assembly with 50A breaker and labeling
- 100 ft NM-B 12/2 cable to support new and reorganized 20A circuits
- 1 × 20A GFCI breaker for required locations (e.g., garage, exterior, crawlspace)
- 3 × Standard receptacles with covers
- 3 × Weatherproof bubble covers for exterior protection

Lead technicians Johann Fischer and Tyler Harris completed the upgrade efficiently and with attention to detail. During the panel changeover, we arranged limited temporary power to keep essential needs met while service was briefly disconnected, then coordinated inspection for a smooth closeout.
