200A Panel Upgrade and EV Charger Prep in Monroe, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, operating from our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive 200A main electrical panel upgrade for a property in Monroe, NC. The project was led by technician Mark Viktorovich and wrapped up on January 6, 2026. The customer, Duke Energy - Allumia, needed a modernized service to support EV charging and improve overall electrical safety.

This job falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades services. Our crew handled all permitting and coordinated final inspection to ensure a smooth, code-compliant result.

What We Upgraded

We replaced the existing main panel with a new indoor-rated 200-amp panel and brought the system up to current electrical code. The work included careful planning to minimize downtime and protect finished areas of the home during the changeover.

  • 200A main panel replacement: Removed the outdated panel and installed a modern unit with clearly labeled circuits.
  • Grounding and bonding: Installed new ground rods and bonded the service equipment to enhance safety and fault clearing.
  • Service reconnections: Reconnected the service entrance conductors and all existing branch circuits.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Added surge protection to help safeguard sensitive electronics and appliances.
  • Temporary power planning: Coordinated limited backup power access during the panel swap to reduce disruption.
  • Permit and inspection: Secured the electrical permit and scheduled inspection with local authorities.

Breaker Configuration and New Circuits

To balance the home’s load and support present and future needs, we installed and configured a range of breakers sized for typical household and EV loads:

  • 15-amp standard breakers: For lighting and standard branch circuits.
  • 20-amp standard breakers: For small appliance and general-use receptacle circuits.
  • 30-amp double-pole breaker: Suited for appliances such as dryers or water heaters.
  • 50-amp standard breaker: Appropriate for ranges, subpanels, or EV charging circuits.
  • 60-amp standard breaker: For heavier loads where required by equipment specifications.

For EV-readiness, our team ran new 6/2 NM-B cable to support a high-demand 240V circuit, then completed the appliance connection for a customer-supplied EV charger (receptacle or hardwired, as applicable to the equipment). This setup prepares the property for efficient, reliable EV charging.

Safety, Code, and Future-Proofing

Monroe area inspectors are increasingly enforcing newer code standards. As part of our process, we review requirements that may include AFCI protection in certain living-area circuits and GFCI protection where required. In some homes, preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—can require additional diagnostic work when upgrading to AFCI. Our team is equipped to identify these situations and provide solutions that align with the latest NEC guidance.

The combination of a modern 200A panel, updated grounding and bonding, and surge protection helps reduce nuisance issues and enhances the overall resilience of the electrical system.

Permitting, Inspection, and Rebate Assistance

We filed the necessary electrical permit and coordinated inspection to close out the project properly. Where EV incentives apply, our team can assist customers with documentation for utility rebate programs. For this project, we supported the process related to a Duke Energy EV program, helping streamline the customer’s path to incentives.
