Project overview

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a 200A main electrical panel upgrade with whole-home surge protection for Kathi Witfield in New Bern, NC. Performed by technicians Jason Bryant and Francisco Martinez, this project was fully permitted, inspected, and brought up to current electrical code on May 27, 2026.

This Panels & Service Upgrades project (Secondary: Electrical Panel Upgrades) replaced an aging main panel, improved system grounding and bonding, and added comprehensive surge protection to safeguard appliances and sensitive electronics.

What we installed

  • Permitting and inspection: All work completed under permit and inspected to current code requirements.
  • 200A indoor main panel (aluminum bus): New panel installed, main lug replaced, panel fully labeled, and all existing circuits reconnected. The panel was grounded and bonded per code. Includes an aluminum bus bar with a 20-year transferrable warranty.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Installed a system with a $10,000 equipment protection warranty for 3 years, helping protect the home from utility and lightning-related surges.
  • Breaker installation and updates:
    • 1x 80A Standard
    • 1x 60A Standard
    • 1x 50A Standard
    • 4x 30A Standard (double pole)
    • 1x 30A Standard (single pole)
    • 6x 20A Standard
    • 6x 15A Standard
  • Clean routing and fishing: 35 feet of wire fishing through hard-to-reach areas to maintain a neat, code-compliant installation.
  • Crewed for efficiency: An additional electrician wireman supported the project for an efficient, same-day upgrade.

During the changeover, power was temporarily disconnected. To keep essential items running, Touchstone provided a generator for limited power use during the outage.

Code compliance and safety upgrades

The new main panel was brought up to current electrical code and professionally labeled for easier future service. Grounding and bonding enhancements help ensure safe fault clearing and reduce nuisance issues. As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020, some homes may require AFCI breaker upgrades on certain circuits. Our team is equipped to advise on these requirements during inspection or future service.

The aluminum bus main panel installed here carries a 20-year transferrable warranty. For homeowners comparing options, our copper-bus panel offering carries a longer warranty; ask our team for details to choose the best fit for your home and budget.
