Project overview
Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive 200-amp electrical service upgrade for a Jacksonville, NC home, improving capacity, safety, and surge protection throughout the property. This project brought the system in line with current electrical codes, provided robust whole-home surge protection, and set the home up for reliable power delivery for years to come.
To minimize disruption, our team handled all permitting, coordinated with the utility for the scheduled power drop, and offered a temporary generator for limited power during the outage upon request. The work is backed by our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty.
What we upgraded
- Main electrical panel replacement (200A, indoor): Installed a new panel with an aluminum bus and a 20-year transferable warranty. The panel was properly grounded and bonded, all existing circuits were reconnected, and the directory was clearly labeled for easy future reference.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed a panel-mounted device featuring $50,000 equipment coverage with a 10-year warranty to help guard appliances and electronics from lightning-induced surges, utility fluctuations, and everyday voltage spikes.
- Meter/panel combo with feed-through lugs: Upgraded the exterior service with a new meter/panel combination and installed grounding electrodes and conductors per code.
- Overhead riser with weatherhead: Provided new riser assembly and conduit to deliver safe, code-compliant service entrance conductors to the meter location.
- Feeder to indoor panel (SER 4/0, 4-wire): Ran new 200A-rated SER feeder from the meter/panel combo to the indoor main panel; included approximately 45 feet of cable and 2-inch PVC conduit with fittings as applicable.
- Service conductors (XHHW 4/0 stranded): Installed conductors suitable for wet locations and conduit runs.
- Breaker updates: Installed a set of standard breakers sized for common household loads, including:
- Two 50A breakers for large equipment or EV charging
- One 45A breaker as needed for dedicated loads
- Three 30A double-pole breakers for dryer, water heater, or HVAC
- Three 20A double-pole breakers for appliances or specialty circuits
- Seven 20A standard breakers for small-appliance circuits
- Five 15A standard breakers for lighting and general-use circuits
- Circuit extensions: Extended wiring to reach the newly located equipment and ensure clean terminations at the upgraded panel.
- Permits and inspections: Pulled required permits and arranged final inspection.
Why this upgrade matters
A 200-amp service offers the capacity today’s homes need for modern appliances, HVAC, EV charging, and future additions. Pairing the upgrade with whole-home surge protection helps safeguard sensitive electronics and major equipment, reducing the risk of damage from sudden voltage spikes and helping extend the lifespan of your devices.
Our installation also positions the home for evolving code requirements. As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020, certain circuits may require AFCI upgrades. Our team plans for these updates and communicates options if additional breaker changes or diagnostic time are needed.
