200A Electrical Panel Upgrade and Surge Protection in Wingate, NC

On December 11, 2025, our Charlotte branch (Matthews team) completed a comprehensive electrical service upgrade for Daniel Brown in Wingate, NC. Led by technician Tyquan Johnson, this project modernized the home’s main service with a new 200A outdoor panel, refreshed breakers, improved grounding, and a whole‑house surge protector with robust equipment coverage.

Project Scope and What We Upgraded

  • Permitting: Filed the electrical permit with the county for code‑compliant work and inspection. Note: non‑electrical permits (zoning, historic, environmental, etc.) are not included unless specifically required.
  • Main Panel: Installed a new 200A aluminum outdoor main panel, grounded and bonded to current code, with clean labeling and reconnection of existing circuits and service conductors. Includes a 20‑year transferable panel warranty.
  • Breaker Updates: Replaced and added breakers to match the home’s loads and improve reliability:
    • 11 × 20A standard (small appliances and general‑use circuits)
    • 7 × 15A standard (lighting and standard branch circuits)
    • 1 × 100A 2‑pole (subpanel)
    • 1 × 20A 2‑pole (small appliances)
    • 1 × 50A standard (range, furnace/heat, EV charger, or similar loads)
    • 1 × 15A 2‑pole (small appliances)
    • 1 × 40A standard (dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, or EV)
  • Grounding Upgrade: Drove a new ground rod (typically ~8 ft) and installed a continuous grounding electrode conductor (up to 25 ft) back to the main service panel for improved fault clearing and safety.
  • Whole‑Home Surge Protection: Installed a panel‑mounted surge protective device with $50,000 equipment coverage and a 10‑year term. This SPD helps shield appliances and hard‑wired systems from voltage spikes related to storms, utility fluctuations, and large equipment cycling. Coverage is secondary to the homeowner’s insurance and excludes direct lightning strikes.

Code, Safety, and Future‑Ready Power

Bringing the main panel and grounding system up to current electrical code enhances safety, improves reliability, and helps prepare the home for future additions like an EV charger, HVAC upgrades, or kitchen remodels. As jurisdictions continue adopting NEC 2020, some homes may require AFCI breaker upgrades on certain circuits; in a few cases, preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) can require additional diagnostic time to resolve. Our team advises homeowners on these scenarios during inspection and commissioning.

Why This Matters for Wingate Homeowners

  • Increased capacity: A 200A main panel supports today’s higher electrical demands and future projects.
  • Fewer nuisance trips: New, correctly sized breakers improve circuit reliability.
  • Better grounding: A robust grounding system protects people and equipment while aiding proper breaker operation.
  • Whole‑home surge defense: The SPD helps extend the life of sensitive electronics and appliances by diverting damaging surges safely to ground.
  • Permitted and inspected: Work was completed under permit for peace of mind and documented compliance.
