What We Upgraded
- Main Electrical Panel (200A, Aluminum Bus) – Replaced the indoor main panel and brought it to current electrical code. We grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, labeled all circuits, and ensured a clean, serviceable layout. The new panel includes a 20-year transferable panel warranty.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection – Installed a panel-mounted surge protective device designed to divert excess voltage safely to ground, guarding sensitive electronics and appliances from spikes due to lightning, grid fluctuations, or large loads cycling. This device includes a $50,000, 10-year coverage against damage to covered equipment in the unlikely event of protector failure (per manufacturer terms; excludes direct lightning strikes and certain equipment).
- New 200A Meter Base – Replaced the meter base and coordinated permitting and utility scheduling. Installed new grounding electrode conductors and ground rods for a secure, code-compliant service entrance.
- Outdoor Subpanel (Small 4/8) – Added a weather-appropriate subpanel to support exterior or future loads such as spas, pools, or garage equipment (up to 125A), with permitting included.
As part of the panel replacement, we also installed and organized a full set of appropriately sized breakers to match the home’s loads:
- 1x 60A standard breaker
- 1x 50A standard breaker
- 2x 40A standard breakers
- 2x 30A (double pole) standard breakers
- 13x 20A standard breakers for general/small appliance circuits
- 3x 15A standard breakers for lighting and standard branch circuits
Why This Upgrade Matters
- Safety and Reliability – A modern, code-compliant 200A panel with solid grounding and bonding helps reduce nuisance tripping, overheating, and connection issues.
- Appliance and Electronics Protection – Whole-house surge protection provides a first line of defense for HVAC, refrigerators, laundry equipment, ranges, lighting, and other hard-wired devices.
- Future-Ready Capacity – With a serviceable layout and outdoor subpanel, adding circuits for EV charging, workshops, or outdoor amenities becomes simpler.
- Documented Permits and Inspection – All work was permitted and inspected to keep the home compliant with current standards.
To reduce disruption during scheduled outages for this type of work, Touchstone Electric can make a generator available for limited temporary power upon request.
Code and Inspection Notes
As inspectors in our region adopt NEC 2020 updates, they may require certain branch circuits to be protected by AFCI breakers. In some homes, AFCI protection can reveal pre-existing wiring issues—such as shared neutrals—that require correction for proper operation. Our Raleigh team advises homeowners on these requirements and provides options to resolve any discovered conditions safely and efficiently.
