Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a comprehensive 200-amp main electrical panel replacement and surge protection upgrade for Smart Home Comfort in Hillsborough, NC on July 30, 2026. What We Completed
- Permit and coordination: Filed the electrical permit with the county and coordinated inspections.
- Main panel replacement (200A, indoor, copper bus): Removed the existing panel and installed a new copper-bus main panel. Grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, reconnected existing branch circuits, replaced the main lug, and provided clear circuit labeling.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed a service-level surge protective device to divert damaging voltage spikes to ground and help protect connected equipment throughout the home.

- 9 × 20A Standard breakers

- New grounding system: Drove new ground rods and connected the grounding electrode conductor back to the main service panel (up to 25 ft), securing all terminations.
- Power management during outage: For this project, a generator was made available for limited power while the service was de-energized.

Security systems and medical equipment are not covered by this warranty.
AFCI Safety and Code Notes
As local inspectors continue implementing 2020 NEC requirements, certain circuits may require AFCI protection. Installing AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting issues—such as shared neutrals—that may cause immediate tripping. Resolving these conditions can require diagnostic time to locate and correct wiring anomalies. Our team informed the homeowner of these possibilities and installed the specified AFCI protection to enhance fire safety on applicable circuits.
Permitting, Inspection, and Craftsmanship
Our Raleigh branch obtained the electrical permit and prepared the installation for inspection. Only the electrical permit was included for this project; if a jurisdiction requires additional non-electrical permits (e.g., zoning or historic approvals), those are handled separately.
