Durham 200A Electrical Panel Upgrade with Whole-Home Surge Protection

Our Raleigh branch completed a permitted and inspected 200-amp service upgrade for homeowner Greg Braswell in Durham, NC on May 22, 2026. Led by electricians Eric Myers and Brad Williams, the project replaced the aging main panel, upgraded the meter base and riser, and added robust whole-home surge protection to safeguard sensitive electronics and major appliances.

This comprehensive service brought the home’s electrical system up to current code, improved capacity and reliability, and introduced layered protection against voltage spikes—backed by manufacturer warranties and our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty.

What We Delivered

  • Permitting and inspections: We handled all required permits and coordinated final inspection.
  • 200A main panel replacement (indoor): New aluminum-bus panel installed, grounded and bonded, with circuits reconnected and clearly labeled.
  • Panel relocation: Adjusted panel position to meet safety clearances and accessibility requirements.
  • Meter base and riser upgrade: Installed a new 200A meter base, riser with weatherhead, IMC conduit, straps, roof boot, and new service entrance cable to the weatherhead.
  • Utility coordination: Scheduled the temporary power drop with the power provider and managed a safe outage window.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Installed a $10,000 coverage (3-year) surge protection system for added peace of mind.

Warranty notes: The new aluminum-bus main panel includes a 20-year transferable manufacturer warranty. Surge protection includes $10K coverage for 3 years. Touchstone Electric’s Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty is included.

Installed Components and Circuitry

  • Main panel – 200A aluminum bus (indoor): Brought to current electrical code; bonded, grounded, and labeled.
  • Breakers added: 3× 30A double-pole (for larger loads such as dryer or condenser), 4× 20A standard, 15× 15A standard branch circuits.
  • New meter base – 200A: Included installing the new meter and grounding system with ground rods and grounding electrode conductors.
  • Riser and weatherhead: New IMC conduit to the weatherhead with proper strapping and roof boot.
  • Rewiring as needed: 750 ft NM-B 14/2 for 15A lighting/general-use circuits, 150 ft NM-B 12/2 for 20A small-appliance circuits, and 150 ft NM-B 10/3 for 30A 240V loads.

Code Compliance and Safety Considerations

As Durham inspectors continue to adopt NEC 2020 standards, some homes require updates such as AFCI protection on certain branch circuits. When AFCI breakers are required, preexisting wiring conditions (for example, shared neutrals) can cause nuisance tripping until corrected. Our team is experienced in diagnosing and resolving these issues and will advise on the most efficient path to compliance when they arise.

From permit pull to final inspection, our Raleigh technicians ensured this upgrade met or exceeded current code, delivering a safer, more reliable electrical system with clearly organized circuitry and documented labeling for future service.
