Project overview
Touchstone Electric completed a 200-amp main electrical panel upgrade with whole-home surge protection for a homeowner in Belmont, NC. The work was performed by our Charlotte team, operating from our Matthews location, and was completed on March 12, 2026 by technician Tyquan Johnson.
This project brings the home’s service equipment up to current electrical code, improves safety, and adds robust protection against damaging power surges.
What we upgraded
- Electrical permitting: Filed the required electrical permit with the county and coordinated inspection.
- 200A main panel (indoor, aluminum bus): Replaced the existing panel, installed the new main lug panel, labeled circuits, and verified grounding and bonding. Reconnected the service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits.
- Specialty breaker: Installed a required special breaker tailored to this system’s needs.
- Whole-home surge protector: Added a panel-mounted surge protective device to divert excess voltage safely to ground, helping shield wiring, outlets, and hard‑wired equipment from spikes caused by lightning activity, utility fluctuations, or large appliances cycling.

Permit, code, and inspection notes
Our scope included securing the electrical permit and scheduling inspection. Some projects may require additional non-electrical permits (such as historic, zoning, or environmental); when that occurs, we advise on next steps and processing options for those items separately.
As local authorities adopt newer editions of the NEC, inspectors may require certain circuits to be upgraded to AFCI. In homes with conditions like shared neutrals, AFCI breakers can trip until underlying wiring issues are diagnosed and corrected, which can require additional troubleshooting time.
During the panel changeout, power is temporarily disconnected. For homeowner convenience, Touchstone can make a generator available to provide limited power during the outage window.
