200A Electrical Panel Upgrade and Surge Protection in Hendersonville, NC
Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive panel and safety upgrade for homeowner James Shakour in Hendersonville, NC. Performed by our Charlotte branch team based in Matthews, technicians Brian Cain and Theo Coetsee finished the work on March 19, 2024, delivering a cleaner, safer, and more capable electrical system.
This project addressed several priorities in one visit: a 200‑amp main panel replacement, a code‑compliant grounding system, a whole‑house surge protector, detailed crawl‑space corrections, and safe removal of a rooftop fixture requiring an extension ladder.
Scope of Work Completed
- 200A Main Panel Upgrade (Indoor, Aluminum Bus): Replaced the existing panel and upgraded components to current electrical code. Our team installed the new panel, updated all breakers, replaced the main lug, and clearly labeled all circuits.
- Grounding and Bonding: Properly grounded and bonded the new panel and reconnected the service entrance cable and existing circuits to enhance safety and reliability.
- Whole‑Home Surge Protection: Installed a surge protective device at the main panel to help defend sensitive electronics and appliances against voltage spikes from storms and utility fluctuations.
- Crawl‑Space Electrical Safety: Inspected wiring in the crawl space and stapled cables where needed to improve support, reduce strain, and promote a neater, more serviceable installation.
- Rooftop Fixture Removal: Removed a light at the rooftop with proper extension‑ladder access and safety procedures.
During a panel changeover, power is temporarily disconnected; our team made a temporary generator available for limited power use during the outage. For clarity of scope, this upgrade did not include a service disconnect, feeder, or meter/service upgrade.
Why Upgrade to a 200A Panel?
Modern homes in Hendersonville increasingly rely on high‑demand equipment—HVAC systems, kitchen appliances, home offices, and EV chargers. A 200‑amp main service offers:
- Capacity and flexibility: More circuits and headroom for present and future needs.
- Improved safety: Reduced risk of overloaded circuits and tripped breakers.
- Better readiness: Room to add projects like workshops, hot tubs, or vehicle charging.
Benefits of Whole‑House Surge Protection
Surges can originate from lightning, utility events, and even large appliances cycling on and off. A properly installed surge protector at the main panel helps safeguard electronics, HVAC boards, refrigerators, and smart devices by redirecting excess voltage to ground before it reaches your equipment.
Code‑Compliant Grounding and Bonding
Grounding and bonding bring the electrical system to a common reference point, helping breakers trip as intended during a fault. This upgrade reduces shock hazards, mitigates nuisance issues, and supports the overall health of the home’s electrical system—especially important when paired with new surge protection.
Crawl‑Space Corrections and Roof Access Safety
Wiring in tight or damp areas needs proper support. In the crawl space, our electricians stapled and secured cables where needed, improving durability and serviceability. For the rooftop fixture removal, we used an extension ladder and safe access practices to complete the work without disrupting the surrounding roof area.
