Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive Panels & Service Upgrades project for Kelly Jones in Castle Hayne, NC on April 17, 2025. This Electrical Panel Upgrade brought the home’s power distribution up to current code, added robust whole-home surge protection, and improved the grounding system for long-term safety and reliability.

Main Electrical Panel Upgrade (200A)
We replaced the indoor 200A main panel, grounded and bonded the enclosure, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and re-terminated existing branch circuits. The panel was labeled for clear circuit identification and brought into alignment with current electrical code requirements.
To minimize disruption during the outage, we made a generator available for limited power needs. All work included proper permitting and coordination with the local inspection authority.

This configuration supports major appliances, HVAC equipment, small appliances, and general lighting circuits while providing a clean, well-organized panel layout.
Whole-Home Surge Protection
We installed a dedicated surge protective device at the main panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground. The system carries a $50,000 equipment protection limit with a 10-year term. It helps guard sensitive electronics and hardwired systems from voltage spikes caused by lightning, utility fluctuations, and appliance cycling.
Coverage is secondary to the homeowner’s insurance and excludes direct lightning strikes. Covered equipment commonly includes major appliances, HVAC components located inside the home, wiring, outlets/switches, and other hardwired devices; security systems and medical equipment are excluded.
Grounding and Bonding Upgrade
To enhance fault-current and shock protection, we upgraded the grounding electrode system by driving a new ground rod (typically about 8 feet) and installing a continuous grounding electrode conductor back to the main service panel (up to 25 feet as applicable). This work improves overall system safety and helps stabilize voltage during transient events.
Annual Home Safety Plan – GOLD
Kelly’s project included enrollment in our GOLD Membership, beginning with a comprehensive Home Safety Inspection:
- Panel inspection (voltage readings, bus bar condition, bonding, and sealed KOs)
- Testing of surge protection and service disconnects
- Inspection of meter base, feeders, weatherhead/riser, and grounding system
- Testing of home protection systems (Smoke/CO, security, cameras)
- Inspection of HVAC and appliance disconnects
- GFCI testing

Code and Safety Notes
As NEC 2020 adoption expands, inspectors may require AFCI breakers on certain circuits. In some homes, preexisting conditions (such as shared neutrals) can cause nuisance tripping with AFCIs and may require diagnostic time to isolate and correct.
