200A Electrical Panel Upgrade and Sump Pump Circuit in Kannapolis, NC

Completed on April 12, 2025, our Charlotte business unit, operating from our Matthews branch, upgraded a 200-amp indoor main panel and installed a dedicated sump pump circuit for homeowner Jamie Duncan in Kannapolis. Lead technicians Joy Villamizar and Patrick Burke delivered a clean, code-compliant install that adds capacity, protection, and reliability for this home.

Project Overview

The existing panel was at capacity and didn’t allow room for the new sump pump circuit. Our team replaced the indoor main panel with a new 200A unit brought up to current electrical code, added a full grounding system, and provided whole-home surge protection. We also coordinated permitting and inspection so everything is documented and approved.

What We Installed

  • New 200A indoor main panel: Removed the old panel and installed a modern unit. The panel was grounded and bonded, the service entrance conductors were properly reconnected, and existing circuits were neatly reorganized and labeled for easy identification.
  • Dedicated sump pump circuit: A separate, dedicated circuit to help ensure the pump has reliable power when it’s needed most.
  • Grounding system upgrade: Installed ground rod(s) and ran the grounding electrode conductor to the main service panel with secure, code-compliant connections.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Added surge protection to help safeguard sensitive electronics and major appliances from voltage spikes.
  • New breakers, matched to loads:
    • 3× 30A double-pole breakers for large 240V loads (e.g., water heater, air condenser, dryer, spa, EV charger).
    • 1× 60A standard breaker for higher-demand equipment or a small subpanel.
    • 1× 40A standard breaker for mid-range 240V loads.
    • 3× 20A standard breakers for small appliance and general-use circuits.
    • 5× 15A standard breakers for lighting and standard branch circuits, including bathroom lighting per current code.

Code Compliance and Inspection

As part of our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades services in Kannapolis, we bring each installation to current electrical code, including proper grounding, bonding, and labeling. Our team manages the permitting and inspection process, ensuring a smooth path from start to final approval.

With ongoing adoption of newer National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements across North Carolina, inspectors may call for upgrades such as AFCI protection on certain circuits. In some homes, that can uncover preexisting wiring conditions—like shared neutrals—that require additional diagnostic work. We advise homeowners on the best path to compliance and safety should those conditions arise.

Benefits for the Homeowner

  • Added capacity and room for growth: The new 200A panel creates space for future projects like EV charging, HVAC upgrades, or home additions.
  • Reliable sump pump power: A dedicated circuit reduces the chance of nuisance trips that could interrupt pump operation during heavy rain.
  • Enhanced safety: Proper grounding, bonding, and surge protection help safeguard the home’s electrical system and connected devices.
  • Cleaner organization: Clearly labeled breakers make future maintenance faster and simpler.
  • Inspection-ready workmanship: The project was permitted, inspected, and approved in Kannapolis.
