200A Panel Upgrade and Subpanel Tune-Up in Matthews, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch completed a comprehensive electrical upgrade for homeowner Naomi Carry in Matthews, NC. Led by technician Wyatt Barnes and finished on February 26, 2025, this project replaced an outdated Challenger main panel with a modern 200-amp outdoor panel and included a full rejuvenation of the interior subpanel.

This service brings the home’s power distribution up to current code, strengthens safety, and readies the electrical system for today’s high-demand appliances and future additions.

What We Upgraded

  • 200A Main Panel Replacement (Outdoor, Aluminum): Removed the obsolete Challenger panel and installed a new, code-compliant 200A panel. We reconnected the service entrance conductors, transferred existing circuits, and clearly labeled all breakers for quick identification.
  • Grounding and Bonding: Properly grounded and bonded the new panel to enhance safety and fault clearing performance.
  • Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed panel-mounted surge protection to help safeguard electronics and appliances from voltage spikes.
  • Permitting and Inspection: All work performed under permit and scheduled for inspection for full compliance and peace of mind.
  • Limited Power During Cutover: Power was briefly disconnected for the panel swap; we provided generator support for limited essential use during the transition.
  • Warranty Coverage: The new panel includes a 20-year transferable warranty as specified for this installation.

Breaker Configuration Optimized for the Home

We installed and organized a mix of new breakers to match the home’s loads and future needs. This included standard single-pole and double-pole breakers for major appliances and branch circuits:

  • Major Loads: 60A, 50A, 40A, and multiple 30A double-pole breakers for items like ranges, water heaters, HVAC condensers, dryers, spas, and EV charging.
  • Branch Circuits: New 20A and 15A standard breakers for small-appliance and lighting circuits.
  • Space-Saving Options: Select 15A and 20A tandem breakers where appropriate to maximize panel capacity while maintaining code compliance.

As local inspectors implement NEC 2020 updates, certain circuits may require AFCI protection. Our team discussed potential AFCI upgrades and performed functional testing of AFCI/GFCI devices with the homeowner’s consent. If a legacy wiring condition (such as a shared neutral) causes nuisance tripping, we offer targeted diagnostics to resolve it.

Subpanel Rejuvenation and Safety Checks

Inside the home, we completed a detailed panel rejuvenation to restore reliability and extend the life of the existing subpanel:

  • Vacuumed and cleaned the enclosure; inspected for moisture and resealed any openings to keep out water and pests.
  • Re-tensioned terminations on ground lugs, bus bars, and breakers to manufacturer torque specs.
  • Verified one conductor per lug and maintained proper separation of neutrals and grounds in the subpanel.
  • Confirmed correct utility voltage, applied antioxidant where required on aluminum conductors, and tested protective devices.

The result is a tidy, clearly labeled, and securely terminated system designed for dependable everyday performance.
