Project overview

Our Charlotte branch completed a comprehensive 200A main electrical panel upgrade with a new 200A indoor subpanel for a homeowner in Matthews, NC. Led by technician Grady Houston, the project modernized the home’s distribution, added surge protection, expanded circuit capacity, and brought the installation up to current code. Date of completion: January 31, 2025.

What we upgraded and installed

  • 200A Main Panel (outdoor, aluminum): Replaced the existing panel to enhance safety and reliability. We grounded and bonded the panel, labeled circuits, reconnected the service entrance cable, and reconnected existing branch circuits. The installation included permitting and inspection.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Integrated with the new main panel, including a $10k warranty on the surge protective device as specified for this project.
  • 200A Indoor Subpanel: Installed a new subpanel to expand available circuits and improve load management. Permitting included.
  • 4/0 SER Feeder (4-wire): Ran approximately 40 feet of 4/0 Service Entrance Cable from the main panel to the subpanel to provide a robust 200A feeder with an isolated neutral-ground path.
  • New circuit breakers: Added two 50A, one 30A double-pole, seven 20A, and twelve 15A breakers to serve a mix of appliance loads and general lighting/receptacle circuits.
  • Hard-wired smoke detector network: Installed and interconnected new smoke detectors to enhance whole-home life-safety coverage.

Per the project documentation, the new panel carries a 20-year transferrable warranty for this installation.

Code compliance and safety notes

As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 requirements, some homes are required to upgrade select circuits to AFCI protection. While AFCI enhances safety, it can reveal preexisting wiring issues such as shared neutrals that may cause nuisance tripping. If discovered, these conditions can require additional diagnostic time to isolate and correct. Our team communicates these findings clearly and provides options that align with code and the homeowner’s goals.

Why this upgrade benefits the home

  • Capacity and flexibility: A 200A main with a dedicated 200A subpanel provides ample room for future circuits and upgrades like EV charging, HVAC, kitchen appliances, or workshop equipment.
  • Cleaner load distribution: The 4-wire feeder and isolated subpanel neutrals help reduce potential neutral-ground issues and improve overall system stability.
  • Protection for electronics: Whole-home surge protection adds a critical layer against transient voltage events.
  • Clear labeling and organization: Labeled breakers and an organized panel layout simplify maintenance and troubleshooting.
