Project overview
Our Matthews-based Charlotte team completed a comprehensive 200A electrical panel upgrade and indoor subpanel installation for homeowner Dianne Friday in Gastonia, NC. Led by technician Christian Cedillos on 2024-10-15, this project modernized the home’s service equipment, improved safety, and added capacity for present and future electrical needs.
Dianne shared positive feedback about the service and experience with our team.
Scope of work completed
We replaced the aging outdoor main panel with a new 200A aluminum-panel assembly and brought the installation up to current electrical code. The panel was properly grounded and bonded, existing circuits were reconnected, and labeling was updated for clarity. We also added whole-home surge protection to safeguard sensitive electronics and appliances across the property.
To create room for growth and better circuit organization, we installed a midsize indoor subpanel and fed it with a dedicated breaker and properly sized feeder. All work was permitted and scheduled for inspection.
- Main service upgrade: 200A outdoor main panel replaced, grounded, bonded, and relabeled; existing circuits reconnected.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed at the main panel for enhanced protection, including connected-equipment coverage up to $10,000.
- New indoor subpanel: Midsize 12/24 configuration, up to 125A capacity for better load distribution and future expansion.
- Feeder and wiring: Approximately 20 ft of SER 2/0 (4‑wire) feeder cable installed from main panel to subpanel.
- Breakers installed: 100A 2‑pole feeder breaker to the subpanel; a mix of new 30A and 40A double‑pole breakers for larger loads; and several 20A breakers for small-appliance and general circuits.
- Labeling and documentation: Clear circuit identification and updated directory to simplify future maintenance.
- Permitting and inspection: Work performed under permit with inspection coordinated per local requirements.
Why this upgrade benefits Gastonia homeowners
- Safety and code compliance: Modern equipment, grounding, bonding, and labeling help reduce hazards and meet current standards.
- Capacity for today’s loads: A 200A service and added subpanel support appliances, HVAC, EV charging, spas, and other high-demand equipment.
- Surge protection: Whole-home protection helps shield electronics and major appliances from damaging voltage spikes.
- Organization and future-proofing: The new subpanel creates room for additional circuits as the home’s needs grow.
- Clear circuit mapping: Updated directories make troubleshooting and future additions faster and safer.
Code, permitting, and inspection notes
As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may need AFCI breaker upgrades on certain circuits. In a few cases, installing AFCI protection can reveal pre-existing wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping. Resolving those issues can require additional diagnostic time to trace and separate shared circuits. Our team explains these possibilities upfront and coordinates next steps if they arise.
Planned outage and temporary power
Panel replacement requires a utility outage. To minimize disruption during work, Touchstone Electric can make a generator available for limited, temporary power so essential items can remain on while the upgrade is completed.
