200A Electrical Panel Upgrade and Subpanel Installation in Winston-Salem, NC
Our Charlotte branch (based in Matthews) completed a comprehensive service upgrade for homeowner Donna Cole in Winston-Salem, NC on October 8, 2024. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, this project consolidated two older fuse boxes and one outdated panel into a modern, code-compliant 200A main panel with a properly sized indoor subpanel. Permitting and inspection were included to ensure full compliance and peace of mind.
What We Upgraded
- New 200A Main Panel (Aluminum, Indoor): Brought the home’s service up to current electrical code. We replaced the panel and main lugs, labeled all circuits, and completed proper grounding and bonding. The existing service entrance conductors and circuits were reconnected cleanly and securely. Permitting and inspection were part of the job, and we made a generator available for limited power during the outage.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed a surge protector with a $10k warranty for enhanced protection of sensitive electronics and appliances.
- Subpanel (12/24, up to 125A): Added a mid-sized indoor subpanel to distribute circuits efficiently and leave room for future expansion.
- Feeder and Service Entrance Cable: Installed SER 4/0 (4-wire) service entrance cable to support the upgraded amperage and cleanly feed between equipment as needed.
- New Breakers Installed:
- 15x 15A standard breakers for general lighting and branch circuits
- 1x 20A standard breaker for small appliance circuits
- 1x 40A standard breaker (dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, EV charger, etc.)
- 1x 50A standard breaker (range, furnace, small subpanel, EV charger, etc.)
- 1x 125A 2-pole breaker to feed the subpanel
The installed 200A aluminum main panel includes a 20-year transferable warranty on the panel hardware.
Code Compliance, Safety, and AFCI Considerations
As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 requirements, some circuits may require AFCI protection. In certain homes, preexisting conditions like a shared neutral can cause immediate tripping when AFCI breakers are added. If that occurs, isolating the issue can require additional diagnostic time (such as tracing shared neutrals through lighting and device boxes). Our team is experienced in navigating these updates while keeping your home safe and compliant.
