200A Panel Upgrade for a Safer, Code-Compliant Home in Charlotte, NC
On November 26, 2024, our Charlotte team completed a 200-amp electrical panel upgrade for homeowner Vivian Metz in Charlotte, NC. The existing main breaker Bryant panel was obsolete, limiting available breaker space and falling short of modern safety standards. We replaced it with a new outdoor-rated 200A aluminum panel and brought the service up to current electrical code for long-term safety and reliability.
Project Highlights
- Obsolete Bryant panel replacement: Removed the outdated main breaker panel and installed a modern 200A outdoor-rated aluminum panel.
- Full code update: Grounded and bonded the new panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and tied in existing branch circuits.
- Labeling and organization: Clearly labeled the new panel to simplify future maintenance and expansion.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed a surge protector with a $10k warranty for added protection against voltage spikes.
- Proper conductors: Utilized 4/0 THHN conductors sized for 250A+ feeders to ensure safe, efficient service capacity.
- Grounding system: Drove new ground rods and ran the grounding electrode conductor (up to 25 ft) to the main service equipment with secure, code-approved connections.
- Permitting and inspection: Secured the required electrical permit and coordinated inspection with the local authority having jurisdiction.
To minimize inconvenience during the cutover, Touchstone Electric provided a generator for limited power usage while the service was temporarily disconnected.
Inclusions and Notable Benefits
- Permitting and inspection included: We handled the electrical permit filing and coordinated the official inspection.
- Surge protection included: Whole-home surge device with a $10k warranty is part of this installation.
- 20-year transferable panel warranty: The new panel is backed by a 20-year transferable warranty. (For comparison, our copper panel installation offers a 50-year warranty.)
Not included: Individual breakers, a separate service disconnect, feeder, or meter upgrade (if required by site conditions or the power company) were not part of this scope.
Permit note: The included permit covers electrical work only. If a project requires Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, Zoning, or other non-electrical permits, they are separate. If such needs arise, we advise on next steps and can quote assistance for processing those permits.
Code Considerations and AFCI Breakers
As inspectors in our area continue implementing newer editions of the NEC, some projects may require upgrading certain branch circuits to AFCI breakers. Because AFCI devices are sensitive by design, preexisting issues such as shared neutrals can cause immediate tripping. When that occurs, diagnosing and correcting the condition may involve additional time to trace the affected lighting and receptacle circuits. Our team explains these possibilities up front to help homeowners plan for a smooth inspection process.
