Project overview for Rock Hill, SC
On February 28, 2025, Touchstone Electric completed a 200A electrical panel upgrade and relocation for homeowner Paul Duchesne in Rock Hill, SC. The work was performed by our Charlotte team operating from the Matthews branch, with technicians Clay Barnette and Grady Houston leading the installation. This project enhanced system capacity, improved safety, and aligned the home’s electrical service with current code requirements through permitted work and a final inspection.
The centerpiece of the job was a new outdoor 200A aluminum main panel, professionally labeled, grounded, and bonded. We reconnected the service entrance cable and tied in existing circuits to deliver a clean, reliable, and future-ready electrical distribution point.
What we installed
- 200A outdoor main panel (aluminum): Brought up to current electrical code. Replaced the panel and main lugs, labeled all circuits, grounded and bonded the enclosure, reconnected the service entrance cable, and reconnected existing branch circuits.
- Panel relocation: Moved the main panel to a compliant outdoor location to improve access and safety clearances. Any required drywall repairs are by the homeowner; our electricians can recommend a repair company upon request.
- SER 2/0 (4‑wire) feeder: Installed a 2/0 SER four‑wire feeder from the new main panel to the interior subpanel, supporting a 125–150 amp feeder capacity for balanced, grounded power distribution.
- Surge protection: Added whole‑home surge protection with a $10k warranty for added peace of mind against damaging voltage spikes.
- Breakers installed:
- 4x 15A AFCI breakers for general 120V lighting and receptacle circuits (kitchen, dining, bedrooms, living areas, hallways).
- 5x 20A standard breakers for small appliance circuits.
- 1x 20A double‑pole breaker for select 240V small appliances.
- 2x 30A double‑pole breakers for loads such as a dryer, water heater, HVAC condenser, spa, or similar equipment.
- 2x 50A standard breakers for larger loads like a range or EV charger.
- Permitting and inspection: All work was permitted and inspected to verify code compliance.
- Temporary power option: A generator was made available for limited power usage during the outage period associated with the panel changeover.
Safety and code considerations
As Rock Hill adopts modern NEC 2020 requirements, inspectors may require upgrading certain circuits to AFCI protection. While AFCI enhances fire safety, it can immediately trip if a preexisting condition is present—such as a shared neutral on a circuit. In those cases, additional diagnostic time may be required to locate and correct the underlying issue before the circuit can operate normally under AFCI protection.
For long‑term reliability and clarity, our team carefully labeled the new panel and verified correct grounding and bonding. The installed main panel carries a 20‑year transferable warranty, adding value for current and future homeowners.
