About this 200A panel and meter upgrade in Sanford, NC

On September 18, 2025, Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a code-compliant 200A meter/main panel replacement with whole-home surge protection for a home in Sanford, NC. Lead technician Francisco Martinez oversaw the project, ensuring a safe service upgrade, clean workmanship, and a smooth utility coordination process from start to finish.

This Panels & Service Upgrades project was part of our dedicated Electrical Panel Upgrades service, designed to increase capacity, enhance safety, and protect sensitive electronics throughout the home.

Scope of work completed

  • Permit and utility coordination: Pulled the required permit and scheduled the power drop with the local provider for a safe, orderly changeout.
  • Meter/main replacement (200A combo): Installed a new meter/panel combo featuring an aluminum bus bar with a 20-year transferable warranty.
  • Grounding upgrades: Installed ground rods and grounding electrode conductors to current code.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Added a system with a $10K/3-year warranty to safeguard appliances and electronics from voltage spikes.
  • New breakers installed and labeled: 1× 50A standard; 2× 40A standard; 1× 30A double-pole; 3× 30A single-pole; 6× 20A standard; 2× 15A standard.
  • Conduit and conductors: Installed approximately 10 ft of 2″ PVC with fittings, and pulled ~15 ft of THHN 4/0 conductors as required.
  • Wire management: Completed custom rerouting to the outdoor panel for a cleaner, safer layout.
  • Crew support: An additional electrician/apprentice assisted to expedite the upgrade and ensure quality control.

To reduce downtime, we can make a generator available for limited power usage during the scheduled outage upon request.

Safety, code compliance, and what to expect

Our team completed this upgrade to current code standards, including grounding improvements and permitted inspections. As jurisdictions in our area implement NEC 2020, inspectors may require certain circuits to be protected by AFCI breakers. In some homes, preexisting conditions (such as shared neutrals) can cause immediate tripping when AFCI is added, which may require diagnostic time to locate and correct. We set clear expectations with homeowners about these potential requirements so there are no surprises on inspection day.

Note: The 200A meter/panel combo package includes utility scheduling, permitting, installation, and grounding. It does not include the price of riser/weatherhead, service entrance cable to the weatherhead, breakers, or feeder/conduit to interior panels. On this Sanford project, needed breakers, wiring, conduit, and custom tasks were itemized separately.

Warranties included with this project

  • Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty from Touchstone Electric on our workmanship.
  • Aluminum bus bar (panel) warranty: 20-year transferable (manufacturer-backed).
  • Whole-home surge protection: $10,000 connected equipment coverage with a 3-year term (manufacturer-backed).

These protections provide long-term peace of mind and help safeguard the homeowner’s investment in their electrical system.
