Project overview

Our Charlotte team out of the Matthews branch completed a 200A indoor main panel upgrade for homeowner Mary Garris in Lancaster, SC on 2025-05-30. The property already had a 200A exterior meter with an exterior means of disconnect, so no utility power drop was required. We handled permitting and inspection, and scheduled the outage to minimize downtime during the changeover.

Lead technician: Mark Viktorovich. Service category: Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades.

Scope of work completed

  • New 200A indoor main panel: Brought the service up to current electrical code, grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and neatly labeled all circuits. A whole‑home surge protector was integrated for added protection.
  • Grounding system upgrade: Installed new ground rods and connected a grounding electrode conductor from the rods to the main service panel with listed clamps and secure terminations for reliable fault clearing and lightning protection.
  • Feeder between main and subpanel: Installed 40 feet of 4‑wire SER (4/0) cable to tie the new main panel to the existing subpanel, ensuring correct neutral/ground separation and future capacity.
  • New breakers installed:
    • 8× 20A standard breakers for small appliance and general‑purpose circuits
    • 2× 30A double‑pole breakers for higher‑demand loads like a dryer or water heater
    • 2× 50A breakers for large appliances such as a range, heat equipment, a small subpanel, or EV charging

We maintained limited power availability during the planned outage and confirmed proper torque, terminations, and labeling before restoring service.

Code and inspection readiness

As inspectors in our region increasingly reference NEC 2020, certain circuits may be required to use AFCI breakers. Some older homes can have conditions such as shared neutrals that may cause nuisance tripping when AFCI protection is added. If your Lancaster home needs AFCI upgrades, our team can diagnose and resolve these wiring conditions to help your system pass inspection safely and reliably.

Results for this Lancaster home

  • Modernized 200A capacity to support today’s electrical demands, from HVAC to EV charging
  • Safer, code‑compliant grounding and bonding for better system protection
  • Whole‑home surge protection to help safeguard electronics and appliances
  • Clear circuit labeling to simplify future service and homeowner use

Whether you’re renovating, adding major appliances, or preparing for EV charging, a professionally installed 200A panel and grounding system sets your home up for long‑term reliability.
