200A Electrical Panel Upgrade and GFCI Protection in Harrisburg, NC
On April 24, 2024, our Charlotte team based out of the Matthews branch completed a comprehensive electrical upgrade for homeowner Zach Hardy in Harrisburg, NC. This Panels & Service Upgrades project centered on replacing the main service equipment with a modern 200-amp indoor panel, adding whole-home surge protection, installing a 50-amp GFCI breaker, and completing supplemental wiring and outlet work. The job was fully permitted and inspected for safety and compliance.
Scope of Work Completed
- Main Panel Upgrade – 200A (Indoor, Aluminum): Brought the service up to current electrical code. We replaced the panel, properly grounded and bonded it, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and reconnected existing branch circuits. All circuits were clearly labeled for easy future reference.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection: Integrated surge protection to help shield appliances and electronics from damaging voltage spikes.
- 50A GFCI Breaker Installed: A ground-fault protected 50-amp breaker suitable for high-demand equipment such as an EV charger, range, furnace/air handler, or a small subpanel, depending on the homeowner’s needs.
- Standard Receptacle Added: Installed a new outlet with cover for everyday convenience.
- New Wiring Pulled: Ran 15 feet of NM-B 14/2 Romex for a 15-amp general-purpose circuit, including any necessary junction box.
- Double Wood Post Set in Concrete: Two pressure-treated 4x4 posts were trenched and set in concrete, with a horizontal deck board fixed between them—an ideal mounting solution for an outdoor or pool-related subpanel.
- Permitting and Inspection: Touchstone Electric handled the permit process and coordinated inspection to verify the installation met local codes in Harrisburg, NC.
- Planned Outage Managed: Power was safely disconnected during the panel swap, with limited temporary power available during the outage to reduce disruption.
