200A Electrical Panel Upgrade and Generator Inlet in Weddington, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, operating from our Matthews branch, completed a 200-amp panel upgrade and added a portable generator inlet with an interlock for a homeowner in Weddington, NC. This project ensured safe, reliable power distribution and prepared the home for outage-ready backup power.
Completed: April 21, 2026
Technicians: Mark Alaev, Will Cruz, Danny Bishop
Project overview
Our customer, Kerry Jackson, wanted a modernized main electrical setup and a safe way to power essential circuits during utility outages. We replaced an existing 200-amp disconnect with a new 200-amp main breaker feed-through panel and installed a 30-amp generator inlet tied into the new panel with a mechanical interlock. This configuration provides everyday reliability and a code-conscious approach to temporary backup power.
What we installed
- 200A main breaker feed-through panel: Replaced the existing 200A disconnect to improve serviceability and distribution while maintaining the home’s 200-amp service capacity.
- 30A generator inlet: Added a dedicated inlet and conductors to the new panel to accept a portable generator during outages.
- Interlock kit: Installed a mechanical interlock at the outdoor panel so the main breaker and generator breaker cannot be on at the same time, helping prevent dangerous backfeed.
All work was performed to current electrical standards, with neat terminations and clear labeling to simplify future maintenance.
Safety, permitting, and compliance
We filed the electrical permit with the county for this project. Our team follows local and state electrical codes for panel changes and generator connection equipment, helping protect the home, utility workers, and your generator investment.
Permit note: The permit included for this job is the electrical permit only. If a separate non-electrical permit (such as historic, environmental/septic, zoning, builder, or other jurisdictional requirements) is needed, it is not included. If additional permits are required, we will inform you and can provide guidance or a price to process those items.
How the interlock and generator inlet work
The interlock ensures the home is powered by one source at a time—either the utility or the generator. During an outage, the homeowner can safely connect a compatible portable generator to the 30A inlet, switch off the utility main, and engage the generator breaker under the interlock. This helps prevent backfeed and offers a straightforward, compliant way to energize selected household circuits.
