200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Matthews, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a full 200-amp main panel replacement with comprehensive breaker updates and grounding enhancements for homeowner Tom Alrick in Matthews, NC. Led by technician Mark Viktorovich, this permitted and inspected project was completed in October 2025 and designed to boost capacity, safety, and reliability for a modern home.
Project Overview
As homes in Matthews adopt more high-demand appliances and technology, upgrading to a 200A service and refreshed breaker layout helps prevent nuisance trips, accommodates future loads, and aligns the system with today’s safety expectations. For this project, our crew carefully removed the aging panel, organized and labeled circuits, improved grounding, and added whole-home surge protection for added resilience.
Scope of Work Completed
- Main Panel Replacement (200A, indoor): Brought the installation up to current electrical standards; grounded and bonded the panel; reconnected the service entrance cable and existing circuits; and provided clear circuit labeling for easy identification.
- Grounding Upgrades: Drove a new ground rod and installed a continuous grounding electrode conductor (GEC) back to the main service panel, improving system fault-clearing capability.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed a surge protective device to help safeguard household electronics and sensitive equipment from power disturbances.
- Breaker Replacements and Additions:
- 14 × 15A standard breakers for lighting and general branch circuits
- 5 × 20A standard breakers for small appliance circuits
- 3 × 20A double-pole breakers
- 3 × 30A double-pole breakers (typical for dryer, water heater, condenser, spa, or EV equipment)
- 2 × 45A standard breakers
- 1 × 50A standard breaker
- 1 × 60A standard breaker
- Permitting and Inspection: Filed the electrical permit and coordinated the inspection process with the local authority.
- Power Management During the Upgrade: We scheduled the outage and made a generator available for limited power while the panel was being replaced.
Safety, Code, and AFCI Considerations
As Matthews and Mecklenburg County continue to adopt updates from recent NEC cycles, some circuits may require AFCI protection. When AFCI upgrades are called for by inspectors, preexisting conditions like shared neutrals can lead to immediate tripping and may require diagnostic time to correct. For this home, we installed standard breakers as listed above and coordinated inspection; if future AFCI upgrades are requested, we can implement them and address any circuit conditions as needed.
Why Matthews Homeowners Choose a 200A Upgrade
- Capacity for today’s loads: EV chargers, HVAC, modern kitchens, and workshops demand more available amperage.
- Improved reliability: New panels, breakers, and grounding reduce nuisance trips and help equipment run as intended.
- Stronger protection: Surge protection and proper bonding/grounding help safeguard appliances and electronics.
- Future-ready: Room for additional circuits supports remodels, outdoor living spaces, and future technology.
