200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Chapel Hill, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a comprehensive 200-amp indoor electrical panel upgrade for Brett Wilson in Chapel Hill. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, this project modernized the home’s service equipment, improved safety, and provided room for future electrical needs. The work was fully permitted and inspected, with all grounding and bonding brought to current code.

Completion date: October 22, 2025

Scope of Work

We replaced the existing main panel with a new 200A indoor main panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and carefully re-terminated existing branch circuits with new, clearly labeled directories. As part of the upgrade, we installed whole-home surge protection and verified a code-compliant grounding and bonding system for improved safety and reliability.

To align with current electrical standards and meet the home’s usage needs, our team installed a total of 28 new breakers:

  • 6 × 20A standard breakers for small appliance circuits
  • 17 × 15A standard breakers for general lighting and receptacle circuits, including bathroom lighting per 2020 code
  • 3 × 30A standard (double-pole) breakers for equipment such as a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger
  • 1 × 40A standard breaker for a higher-demand circuit
  • 1 × 50A standard breaker for loads like a range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, or EV charger

The result is a safer, more organized electrical system with additional capacity for future upgrades like EV charging, HVAC improvements, or kitchen remodels.

Code Compliance, Permitting, and Inspection

Every panel and service upgrade we perform in Chapel Hill includes permitting and coordination with the local authority having jurisdiction for final inspection. During this project, we verified properly sized conductors, secured terminations, updated labeling, and ensured grounding and bonding met current requirements.

With the adoption of NEC 2020 in many areas, inspectors may require the addition of AFCI protection on certain circuits. In some homes, preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) can cause nuisance trips when AFCI breakers are added. If that arises, our licensed electricians can diagnose and correct the issue to keep the system compliant and reliable.
