200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch completed a comprehensive 200-amp electrical panel upgrade for Helena Adams in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Tyquan Johnson, this project brought the home’s service equipment up to current electrical code, improved capacity for modern loads, and added critical whole-home surge protection. Completion date: December 10, 2025.
As a Panels & Service Upgrades specialist, our Matthews-based team delivered a neat, labeled installation that enhances safety, reliability, and future expandability for everyday living and renovation plans.
What We Installed
- Outdoor-Rated 200A Copper Main Panel: Old equipment was removed and replaced with a durable copper-bus panel. We reconnected the service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits, installed a new main lug, and provided clear circuit labeling.
- Grounding and Bonding: The panel was properly grounded and bonded to meet current code requirements, improving fault-clearing performance and overall system safety.
- New Standard Breakers:
- Four (4) 15A breakers for bathroom lighting and standard lighting/receptacle circuits
- Five (5) 20A breakers dedicated to small-appliance and general-use branch circuits
- Whole-Home Surge Protector: Installed to help defend connected devices against voltage spikes. This model includes a $10,000 surge protection warranty as specified in the project scope.
- Permitting and Inspection: We filed the electrical permit with the county and coordinated the required inspection.
During the cutover, power was temporarily disconnected; a generator was made available for limited power needs to keep essentials running while work was completed.
Code Compliance and Safety Notes
As jurisdictions across the region adopt the NEC 2020, some homes may require upgraded AFCI protection on specific circuits. In certain older wiring systems, AFCI breakers can trip immediately due to preexisting conditions such as shared neutrals. When that occurs, additional diagnostic time may be needed to locate and correct the issue. Our team plans projects with these possibilities in mind to streamline compliance and minimize downtime.
The copper-bus main panel selected for this project offers robust performance and long service life. Copper bus work is known for excellent conductivity and heat tolerance. The installed panel includes a manufacturer-backed 50-year panel warranty per the product specifications noted in the scope.
Permitting, Inspection, and What’s Included
This Electrical Panel Upgrades project included filing the standard county electrical permit and scheduling the final inspection. If a project requires additional non-electrical permits (for example, historic preservation, zoning, septic/environmental, or general building permits), those are not included in the electrical permit scope. When such needs arise, we inform the homeowner of the next steps and can provide pricing to assist with processing and filing those permits as requested.
