Professional 200A Panel Upgrade in Indian Trail, NC
Our Charlotte team, operating from the Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive 200-amp outdoor main panel upgrade and breaker replacement for homeowner Aaron Neigum in Indian Trail, NC. The project was led by Tyquan Johnson and included permitting, inspection coordination, grounding and bonding, and whole-home surge protection to help safeguard sensitive electronics.
This service-focused upgrade delivers safer, more reliable power distribution and extra capacity for modern loads such as EV charging, HVAC, kitchen appliances, and future expansions.
Scope of Work and Components Installed
To bring the home’s electrical system up to current code and enhance overall safety, our licensed electricians performed the following:
- 200A outdoor main panel replacement (aluminum): Removed the aging equipment and installed a new, code-compliant panel. Reconnected the service-entrance conductors and existing branch circuits, updated the directory labeling, and ensured proper grounding and bonding.
- Breaker replacements and additions:
- 100A 2‑pole breaker for a subpanel
- 50A standard breaker (commonly used for a range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, or EV charger)
- 45A standard breaker (often applied to a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger)
- 20A standard double‑pole breaker for designated small-appliance needs
- Whole‑home surge protection: Installed to reduce the risk of damage from voltage spikes and storms.
- Permitting and inspection: Filed the electrical permit with the county and coordinated the inspection to close out the project properly.
- Planned outage and limited backup: Power was safely disconnected during the panel swap. A generator was made available for limited use to minimize disruption while work was underway.
Why Upgrade to a 200A Panel?
A 200-amp service provides the headroom many Indian Trail homes need for today’s higher electrical demands. Beyond capacity, a new panel improves reliability, reduces tripping related to overloaded circuits, and offers an organized, clearly labeled layout for easier maintenance. The included surge protection adds a critical layer of defense for appliances, electronics, and HVAC equipment.
Permits, Code Compliance, and Inspection
Touchstone Electric handled the electrical permit and the inspection process for a smooth, code-compliant installation. Please note: every jurisdiction can require different permits. The included permit covers electrical only. If a Historic Preservation permit, Environmental/Septic permit, Zoning application, separate subcontractor permit, or other non-electrical permits are required for your property, those are not included. If we discover additional permits are necessary, we will provide guidance on what you may need to file and can offer pricing to process non-electrical permits upon request.
AFCI Breaker Considerations
As local inspectors continue to implement NEC 2020 requirements, certain circuits may need AFCI breakers. In some cases, installing AFCIs can immediately reveal preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping. Resolving these conditions can require extra diagnostic time, including tracing affected circuits and devices. Our team will walk you through any findings and recommended corrections if they arise.
