200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in York, SC
Our Charlotte branch, based in Matthews, completed a comprehensive 200-amp outdoor main panel upgrade for homeowner Rudolf Wiegand in York, SC. Led by technician Mark Viktorovich, this project modernized the home’s electrical service to current code, improved safety and reliability, and prepared the system for present and future loads.
Date completed: August 13, 2025
What We Upgraded
We replaced the existing outdoor main panel with a new 200A aluminum model and carefully transitioned all service connections and circuits. Key steps included:
- Removed the existing equipment and installed a new 200A outdoor-rated main panel.
- Replaced the main lug and labeled all circuits for clarity and maintenance.
- Grounded and bonded the panel per current code requirements.
- Reconnected the service entrance (SEU) cable and transitioned existing branch circuits into the new panel.
- Installed a surge protective device for whole-home protection.
- Pulled and connected SEU 4/0 (3‑wire) service cable from the service drop to the meter and from the meter to the distribution panel, properly sized for a 200A main.
- Provided permitting and arranged inspections to verify safe, code-compliant work.
To minimize disruption, power was briefly disconnected during the changeover, and we made a generator available for limited essential loads throughout the outage.
Breaker Replacements and Additions
To match the home’s electrical needs and panel upgrade, we installed and/or replaced the following breakers:
- Two 30A double‑pole breakers
- One 40A standard breaker
- One 50A standard breaker
- One 100A two‑pole breaker for a subpanel
These sizes are commonly used for higher‑demand equipment and feeders, and ensure the system’s protective devices are matched to the loads and conductors they serve.
Built for Safety, Compliance, and Reliability
This upgrade emphasized long‑term safety and code compliance for the home in York. Proper grounding and bonding were verified, conductors were sized and terminated correctly, and circuits were clearly labeled for future service. The project was permitted and inspected to provide third‑party verification of workmanship and compliance.
With inspectors increasingly applying NEC 2020 updates, homes may be required to use AFCI protection on certain circuits. In some cases, installing AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting wiring issues (such as shared neutrals) that require troubleshooting to resolve. Our team is equipped to diagnose and correct these conditions to help keep your system safe and dependable.
The new aluminum 200A panel includes a 20‑year transferable panel warranty, and surge protection helps defend sensitive electronics from damaging voltage spikes.
Fixture Install and Finishing Details
As part of this visit, we also installed a customer‑supplied light fixture on an existing box and circuit, confirming proper support and secure terminations before testing operation.
