200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Richlands, NC
On August 15, 2025, our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive main service upgrade for homeowner Elmer Price in Richlands, NC. Led by technician Matthew Castello, the project replaced an aging panel with a modern 200-amp indoor main panel featuring a copper bus, integrated surge protection, and updated circuit protection to align with current electrical codes. The work was permitted and inspected for safety.
Scope of Work
- Pulled the required permit and coordinated inspection with the local authority.
- Removed the existing panel and installed a new 200A main electrical panel with a copper bus. Replaced the main lugs, grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and reconnected and labeled all existing circuits.
- Installed a whole-home surge protection device that includes $10k warranty coverage for added peace of mind.
- Upgraded overcurrent protection with a mix of AFCI, GFCI, and standard breakers:
- 10 AFCI breakers (15A and 20A) serving bedrooms, living areas, dining, and lighting in compliance with modern code practices.
- 1 GFCI breaker (20A) for protection in wet or damp locations such as bathrooms, laundry, garage, and exterior circuits.
- Standard single- and double-pole breakers (15A–40A) to support major appliances and general branch circuits, including dryer, water heater, A/C, and small-appliance loads.
- Added two dedicated garage receptacle circuits to reliably power tools and equipment.
- Planned a safe outage window for the panel changeout and offered temporary power options to reduce disruption.

Note that installing AFCIs can reveal preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may cause nuisance tripping and could require additional diagnostics to resolve.
