200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Mooresville, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team (based in Matthews) completed a full 200-amp indoor main panel upgrade for homeowner Jessica Moggridge in Mooresville, NC. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, this project was completed on 2024-11-21 and focused on bringing the home’s service equipment up to current code, improving safety, and preparing the electrical system for present and future demand.
This work was fully permitted and scheduled for inspection, with all labeling, grounding, and bonding performed to meet current requirements and support a reliable, organized electrical system.
What We Upgraded
We replaced the aging panel with a new 200A aluminum indoor main panel and completed a comprehensive set of improvements to enhance safety, resilience, and serviceability.
- Removed the existing panel and installed a new 200A main panel with new main lugs
- Grounded and bonded the panel to meet current electrical code
- Reconnected the service-entrance conductors and all existing branch circuits
- Clearly labeled every circuit for easier maintenance and troubleshooting
- Repulled selected conductors and corrected terminations to ensure code-compliant connections
- Installed a whole-home surge protector with a $10,000 warranty for added protection against voltage spikes
- Provided a generator option for limited power use during the outage
- Backed the new panel with a 20-year transferrable panel warranty
Breakers Installed for Safe, Balanced Power
To deliver reliable protection and appropriate capacity across the home, we installed new standard and GFCI breakers matched to the connected loads and locations.
- 1 × 30A Standard Double-Pole (typical uses: dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, EV charger)
- 1 × 40A Standard (typical uses: dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, EV charger)
- 1 × 50A Standard (typical uses: range, furnace/air handler, small subpanel, EV charger)
- 7 × 20A Standard (small appliance and general-purpose circuits)
- 2 × 20A GFCI (bathrooms, laundry, garage, exterior, crawl spaces, basements, as applicable)
- 11 × 15A Standard (lighting and standard branch circuits)
Each breaker selection supports correct circuit ratings and modern safety practices. Where GFCI protection is required, we installed dedicated GFCI breakers to meet code for wet and damp locations.
Permits, Code, and Inspection
All work was completed to current code, with permitting and inspection included. As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020, some homes may require additional AFCI protection on certain circuits. Homeowners should be aware that adding AFCI protection can reveal preexisting wiring conditions, such as shared neutrals, that may cause nuisance tripping until corrected. In situations like shared neutrals, resolving the issue may involve tracing affected circuits and revising connections to current standards.
