Completed 200A Panel Upgrade and Breaker Replacement in Charlotte, NC

On January 30, 2026, Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a 200-amp outdoor main panel upgrade and targeted breaker replacements for Billy Martin (Apex Custom Builders) in Charlotte, NC. Lead technician Christian Cedillos brought the service equipment up to current code, improved grounding and bonding, and added whole-home surge protection to help safeguard appliances and sensitive electronics.

The customer praised our work with a Google review. Read it here: View on Google.

Scope of Work

  • Safely removed outdated components within the work area while keeping other electrical systems connected to minimize disruption.
  • Installed a new outdoor-rated 200A main panel and main lugs, then clearly labeled the new panel directory.
  • Grounded and bonded the panel to current standards, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and tied in existing branch circuits.
  • Added whole-home surge protection to help protect the home’s electrical system from damaging voltage spikes.
  • Replaced selected breakers to match circuit needs:
    • 2 × 50A standard breakers
    • 1 × 40A standard breaker
    • 2 × 20A standard breakers
    • 2 × 15A standard breakers

These breaker sizes commonly serve loads such as ranges, dryers, water heaters, HVAC equipment, small appliances, and general lighting circuits.

  • Handled permitting and inspection for a smooth, code-compliant finish.
  • Made limited generator power available during the scheduled outage to keep essential items running.

Code and Safety Details

As inspectors in Charlotte continue implementing NEC 2020 requirements, some projects may involve upgrading certain circuits to AFCI protection. AFCI updates can reveal preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may require additional diagnosis to resolve nuisance tripping. Our team advised the client on these considerations and ensured the panel, grounding, and bonding met current code at completion.

Why This Upgrade Matters

  • Capacity and reliability: A modern 200-amp main panel supports today’s appliances and future additions like EV chargers or HVAC upgrades.
  • Improved safety: Proper grounding, bonding, and updated breakers help reduce risks associated with outdated equipment.
  • Cleaner organization: A freshly labeled panel directory simplifies maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Electronics protection: Whole-home surge protection offers an added layer of defense against power surges.
