Project overview
As part of our Panels & Service Upgrades service category, this job focused on replacing an aging main panel with a new 200A indoor copper panel and bringing the system into alignment with current NEC safety standards. The work also included grounding upgrades, AFCI/GFCI protection where required, surge protection, new outlets and weatherproof covers, targeted wiring improvements, and full permitting and inspection coordination.
What we installed
- Main Panel – 200A Copper (indoor): Replaced the existing panel, reconnected service entrance conductors and branch circuits, properly grounded and bonded, and clearly labeled all circuits.
- Grounding system upgrade: Drove a new ground rod and installed a continuous grounding electrode conductor (GEC) to the main service panel to improve fault clearing and lightning protection.
- Breakers:
- 1 × 30A double-pole standard breaker for dedicated loads (e.g., dryer, water heater, condenser, spa, or EV charger as applicable).
- 6 × 20A standard breakers for small-appliance and general-use circuits.
- 15 × 15A standard breakers for lighting and standard branch circuits.
- 6 × 15A AFCI breakers for enhanced arc-fault protection on living spaces per current code requirements.
- GFCI protection: 2 × GFCI receptacles installed with covers for code-compliant shock protection in required locations.
- Weather-resistant coverage: 5 × in-use “bubble” covers to protect exterior outlets from moisture, whether in use or not.
- Conduit and wiring improvements: 4 ft of 1/2" PVC conduit with fittings and 50 ft of NM-B 12/2 Romex for clean, code-compliant routing where needed.
- New receptacles: 4 × standard outlets installed with covers.
- Permitting: Filed the electrical permit and coordinated inspection with local authorities.
Code and safety enhancements
Upgrading to a copper 200A panel increases capacity and reliability for modern appliances, EV charging, and future renovations. We also incorporated AFCI and GFCI protection according to current code to reduce the risk of arc faults and shock hazards in living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoors.
Note on AFCI: Installing AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may cause nuisance tripping.
