Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive 200A electrical panel upgrade and breaker replacement for homeowner Christine Freeland in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Jose Rodriguez from our Charlotte (Matthews) branch, this project replaced an outdated, crowded indoor panel, brought wiring and grounding to current electrical code, and ensured the home is ready for future electrical needs. The work included permitting and coordination with the local inspection authority.

What we upgraded and why it mattered

The original panel lacked space and was no longer a good fit for the home’s electrical demands. Our team installed a new 200A aluminum indoor main panel and completed the critical safety steps that go with a modern service upgrade. This not only improves reliability but also adds capacity for appliances and potential additions like EV charging or HVAC updates.

  • Removed the outdated main panel and installed a new 200A indoor panel
  • Reconnected service entrance conductors and all existing branch circuits
  • Properly grounded and bonded the panel to current requirements
  • Clearly labeled circuits for easier future maintenance
  • Installed whole-home surge protection (includes $10k warranty coverage on the surge device)
  • Obtained the electrical permit and arranged final inspection
  • Made a generator available for limited power during the scheduled outage

Breakers we installed for balanced, code-forward protection

To support household lighting, appliance, and equipment circuits, we replaced and organized the breakers as part of the panel upgrade:

  • 9 × 15A Standard breakers for bathroom lights and standard branch circuits
  • 4 × 20A Standard breakers for small appliance circuits
  • 1 × 20A Double-Pole breaker for small appliances or specialty loads
  • 2 × 30A Double-Pole breakers for dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charging
  • 1 × 40A Standard breaker for medium-duty equipment
  • 1 × 50A Standard breaker for range, furnace/air handler, small subpanel, or EV charger
  • 1 × 60A Standard breaker for higher-demand equipment or subpanels

Built to today’s standards

As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may need updates like AFCI protection on designated circuits. In certain cases, preexisting conditions (for example, a shared neutral on a multi‑wire branch circuit) can cause AFCI devices to trip until the underlying issue is corrected. Our team evaluates these scenarios during upgrades, communicates findings, and provides solutions to help your home meet current code while minimizing nuisance trips.

Local expertise you can count on

  • Whole-home surge protection included as part of the upgrade
