200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, operating from our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive outdoor 200A main panel upgrade for Carlton Philips in Charlotte. The project was finished on February 25, 2026, by technician Christian Cedillos, delivering a safer, code-compliant electrical system with clean labeling and improved protection.
After completion, Carlton praised our team in a review for the quality of workmanship and professionalism throughout the upgrade process.
Scope of Work and Results
As part of this Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades project, we replaced the existing outdoor main panel and ensured full compliance with current electrical code and local inspection requirements. Key steps included:
- Removed the existing equipment and installed a 200A aluminum outdoor main panel.
- Grounded and bonded the new panel, reconnected the service entrance cable, and reconnected all existing circuits.
- Labeled all circuits for clarity and future serviceability.
- Installed a panel-mounted surge protector with a $10k warranty for added whole-home protection against voltage spikes.
- Added and replaced breakers as needed for dedicated loads:
- (2) 30A Double-Pole Standard Breakers — commonly used for a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger.
- (1) 20A Double-Pole Standard Breaker — for small appliances or other dedicated 240V loads.
- (1) 40A Standard Breaker — suitable for larger appliances or equipment.
- (1) 50A Standard Breaker — for a range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, or EV charger.
- (1) 100A Two-Pole Breaker — dedicated for a subpanel.
This upgrade did not include a separate service disconnect, feeder, or meter upgrade, as they were not required for this scope.
Permitting, Inspection, and Power Management
The project included all permitting and inspection required in Charlotte. During panel replacement, power must be safely shut off; to minimize downtime, Touchstone Electric provided a generator for limited power usage during the outage window.
Code Compliance and AFCI Considerations
With NEC 2020 adoption expanding across the region, inspectors may require certain circuits to be upgraded to AFCI protection. Installing AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may cause immediate tripping. In those cases, resolving the issue can involve tracing and correcting wiring on the affected circuits, which may require additional diagnostic time. Our team informs homeowners up front and addresses these findings methodically to maintain both safety and compliance.
Warranties and Long-Term Value
The new 200A panel carries a 20-year transferrable warranty, offering long-term peace of mind. For added protection, we included a surge protector with a $10k warranty. As a reference point for homeowners comparing options, our copper panel installations carry a longer warranty period; this project utilized an aluminum-panel solution based on the home’s needs.
