200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Gibsonville, NC
Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive 200-amp indoor panel upgrade and breaker replacement for homeowner Philip Olivier in Gibsonville, NC on June 17, 2024. Led by Cody Perry, this project modernized the home’s electrical distribution, improved safety, and prepared the property for present and future power needs.
This service falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades offerings and included permitting and coordination of the required municipal inspection.
Scope of Work
We replaced the existing panel with a new 200A indoor aluminum-bus main panel and brought the installation up to current code. Key tasks included:
- Remove outdated equipment and install new 200A main panel with new main lugs.
- Ground and bond the panel to meet current electrical code requirements.
- Reconnect the service entrance cable and all existing branch circuits.
- Label all circuits in the new panel for clear identification and maintenance.
- Integrate a whole-home surge protector with a $25k warranty for added protection.
- Install approximately 35 feet of 1/2-inch PVC conduit with fittings and LBs as applicable for neat, protected routing.
Note: This scope did not include a separate service disconnect, feeder, or meter upgrade. If those components are needed, Touchstone Electric can provide them as an additional service.
Breaker Layout and Circuit Support
To ensure proper protection and capacity for household systems, we installed a balanced set of new breakers:
- 1 × 40A standard breaker – suitable for higher-load appliances (e.g., dryer, water heater, condenser, spa, or EV charger).
- 4 × 30A double-pole breakers – commonly used for water heaters, condensers, dryers, spas, or EV charging circuits.
- 1 × 25A double-pole breaker – ideal for a small condenser, well pump, or small mini-split.
- 5 × 20A standard breakers – for small appliance branch circuits.
- 13 × 15A standard breakers – for lighting and general circuits, including bathroom lighting per 2020 code requirements.
This configuration provides dependable protection, circuit clarity, and headroom for future upgrades while keeping the home aligned with current safety standards.
Code Compliance, Permitting, and Inspection
Safety and compliance were central to this project. Our team ensured proper grounding and bonding practices and updated labeling. The service included permitting and coordination of inspection with the local authority. Power was temporarily disconnected during the panel change, and our team made a generator available for limited power use to minimize disruption.
Benefits for the Homeowner
- Increased capacity to 200A: Ready for modern loads and future additions like EV charging or HVAC upgrades.
- Enhanced safety: Proper bonding, grounding, and updated breakers reduce the risk of overloads and faults.
- Whole-home surge protection: Added defense against power surges with a $25k warranty surge device.
- Clear circuit labeling: Easier maintenance and faster troubleshooting.
