200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Cornelius, NC

On March 10, 2025, our Charlotte team completed a 200A outdoor main panel upgrade with new breakers, grounding/bonding, and surge protection for homeowner Pat Russell in Cornelius, NC. Lead electrician Christian Cedillos replaced the aging equipment, brought the installation to current electrical code, and ensured the home is ready for future electrical needs.

This project was coordinated through our Matthews branch and included permitting and inspection with the local authority having jurisdiction. We reconnected the service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits, labeled the new panel, and verified proper grounding and bonding throughout.

What We Installed

  • Main Panel – 200A Aluminum (Outdoor): New outdoor-rated main panel, grounded and bonded, with existing circuits reconnected and clearly labeled.
  • Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed a surge protector that includes $10k warranty coverage for added peace of mind.
  • 2 × 30A Double‑Pole Breakers: Standard breakers suitable for loads such as a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger (as applicable).
  • 1 × 50A Standard Breaker: Commonly used for a range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, or EV charger.
  • 1 × 25A Double‑Pole Breaker: Appropriate for a small condenser, well pump, or compact mini‑split system.
  • 1 × 125A (2‑Pole) Breaker: Dedicated feeder for a subpanel.

To minimize downtime during the service change, we made a generator available for limited power usage while utility power was disconnected.

Code Compliance, Permitting, and Inspection

We filed the electrical permit with the county and coordinated inspection as part of this upgrade. The panel and associated work were brought to current electrical code for safety and reliability.

As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020, some homes may be required to upgrade certain circuits to AFCI breakers. In rare cases, installing AFCI protection can reveal a preexisting issue (such as a shared neutral), which may require additional diagnostics—sometimes tracing through light fixtures on the affected circuit—to resolve. Our team explains these findings clearly and provides options if additional work is recommended.

Warranty and Future‑Ready Capacity

The installed aluminum 200A panel includes a 20‑year transferable warranty. We also offer copper panel installations that include a 50‑year warranty for customers interested in that upgrade path. With 200A service capacity and new breakers in place, the home is better prepared for added loads such as EV charging, HVAC upgrades, or a future subpanel expansion.

Permit Scope and Exclusions

This project included the standard electrical permit. Note that jurisdictions may require additional non‑electrical permits for certain projects. The following, if applicable, are not included in the electrical permit:

  • Historic Preservation permits
  • Environmental/Septic permits
  • Zoning applications
  • Separate subcontractor or builder permits

If additional permits are required, we will advise you on next steps and can provide pricing to process, notarize, and file those non‑electrical permits if you prefer.
