200A Electrical Panel Upgrade and AC Subpanel in Charlotte, NC
Our Charlotte team at the Matthews branch completed a comprehensive service upgrade for Scott and Lauren Simon on October 15, 2024. This project combined a new exterior meter-main combo, a 200-amp main panel upgrade, and a dedicated 4-circuit AC subpanel to increase capacity, improve safety, and streamline future maintenance for their Charlotte home.
Technicians: Steve Goheen and Danny Bishop
Scope of Work
- Exterior meter-main combo: Furnished and installed a new exterior meter panel combo to modernize the service equipment and enhance accessibility for utility and inspection needs.
- Main electrical panel upgrade (200A): Replaced the indoor main panel with a 200-amp aluminum bus panel, brought to current electrical code. This included new breakers, updated labeling, proper grounding and bonding, and reconnection of service entrance and existing circuits.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed a surge protective device to help guard sensitive electronics and HVAC equipment against voltage spikes.
- Dedicated AC subpanel (4 circuits): Added an exterior four-circuit panel to serve the home’s air conditioning equipment, providing cleaner distribution and easier serviceability.
- Circuit extensions and outlets: Extended three circuits (up to 25 feet each) and installed outlets as needed to support the new layout and homeowner needs.
- Fixture installations: Installed three customer-provided light fixtures on existing boxes/circuits.
- Safety membership checks: Performed Annual Home Safety Membership – Gold inspections, including smoke/CO detector checks, panel safety review, and verification of connections, seals, and code updates.
- Permits and inspections: Secured the required electrical permit and coordinated inspections to ensure full compliance.
Permitting, Utility Coordination, and Power Downtime
As with most Panels & Service Upgrades in Charlotte, an electrical permit and utility coordination were required. Our team handled scheduling with the inspection department and Duke Energy for an orderly shut-down and re-energization.
Power must be disconnected during panel and meter combo work. Depending on inspection timing and utility release, customers may experience up to 1–2 days of downtime. We always work to restore power the same day when possible, and a generator was made available for limited essential power during the outage to keep the household comfortable and safe.
Why This Upgrade Matters
- Capacity for today’s loads: A 200A service and modern panel architecture support HVAC, EV charging readiness, and future renovations.
- Enhanced safety and code compliance: Proper grounding/bonding, updated breakers, and clear circuit labeling reduce risk and simplify maintenance.
- HVAC performance and serviceability: A dedicated AC subpanel isolates cooling equipment for better protection, faster troubleshooting, and cleaner wiring.
- Surge protection: Helps shield the home’s electronics and appliances from damaging surges and transients.
